We were making an afternoon hunt at Grant parish lease the wind was just right. Caleb is seven years old and today he would be the shooter, if anything were to show up. We had been seeing a few scrapes around our plot and were trying real hard not to mess up and only hunt when the wind was just right. Today was the day...it was a southwest wind all day. We got into the stand early afternoon about 2pm and at 5:00pm his buck walked across our plot to a mock scrape. The Shot was 145 yards with his youth 700 308. Caleb is always with me at the lease working on plots and anything else that needs to be done. He has passed on some small deer looking for something better to shoot.

Big thanks to Bubba at xtremewhitetails@att.net Taxidermy this is the best job I have ever gotten.

Congratulations on a great buck and 145 yards, great shot. My boy got his first buck this year, so I know how excited you both were. Nice to see all that hard work paying off.

You know Bubba I have some 10 year old mounts that are falling apart. The two you have mounted for me looks so good how will they good in ten years?

mounts
As long as you keep my mounts out of direct sunlight or the kitchen, they will stay just like they are long after we are gone. And smoking also will turn them yellow. all the cracking and fading is due to no tanning. ALL deer that are tanned with borax will do this. They wont last, and they attract moths.

Why do you not use a dry tan like all the other guys and is that why my other mounts look so bad? Eyes cracking and ears that are getting splits in them?

dry tan
dry tanning is not really tanning. that is basically cutting away most of the meat in the fleshing process. rolling the skin around in borax and mounting it. that leaves alot of blood and natural juices in the skin. those juices are what cause the mount to fade and hair fall out. the reason they crack and split is because a dry tanned skin takes months to really dry. these deer are finished before the piece is dry and sent out the door. well while the head is n your wall it is stillll drying. causing the cracking and splitting you see on your other deer. dry tanning is basically a way to get them in and get them out. they will never last.
