Deer Stand

Reply
Alright all you sportsman out there, I need a little advice. I had my deer stand stolen recently and need to purchase a new one. I had an Ol Man that I had used for the last 5 years and loved it. I am not sure what I want to purchase, but I hear a lot of good things about the Summit stands, I am looking for a climber, that is light weight (20lbs. or less) and easy to attach to a tree in a small amount of time. Are there any other stands out there I need to take a look at? All advice is welcome

I have found that the climbing stands that use a cable make noise. The cables stretch as you put weight on them. It gets worse as it gets colder. I would sacrifice a pound or two to get one that is quiet.

stick with the ole man. I have yet to find one that I prefer over the ole man. They are lighter, pack up tighter, and are quiet. ofcourse you already know this after hunting with them for five years. If it was stolen while it was left on the tree, replace the holdback pins with padlocks.

Thanks

This stand is amazing. You can adjust the kevlar covered steel band as the tree trunk gets smaller while going up the tree. It is comfortable and quiet. Expensive, but not much more than the ol' man. The Archer model has no bar in front of the seat while the Hunter has a bar in front of the seat.
The ol' man is called something else now if you decide to stick with it. I think a Gorilla treestand is now the ol' man.

Gorilla stnads are very similar to Ole Man and easy to put on a tree. It is a cable system around the tree so there is limited damage to the tree as well. It also has the tie straps to lock around the tree once you are in place. I have 3 of them and I haven't had any problems at all.

I have an old API 2500 GSLite, which is 16#. I think the newer ones are 20-22#, but I saw an older one on sale at natchezss.com. I also have a Lone Wolf Loc-on, and it is fantastic, so their Climber is probably pretty good too. I used an Ol Man twice, and can tell you the API is much beter.

I also use an ol' man stand, but i guy i hunt with purchased an equalizer stand this year. The stand is light and very easy to put up, not to mention it is very easy to sit for hours. I will order one for me this year. You can get a dvd about the stand and it shows you everything about it. I advise you to order the dvd and watch it before you make a decision.

I bought a new Summit in December due to the fact I was told that Ol'Man was out of business. I loved there product but was told they are gone for good.

i have 3 in my group that use the ole mans and i've used thier climbers to hunt diffrent spots . the summit goliath rules the trees in my opinion.

I bought this stand at the beginning of this season. I absolutely love it. Easy setup, quiet, comfortable, about 19 lbs. I highly suggest it. Hope this helps.

bullbowfin is right. I just went check out those northstar stands. That looks like a great stand. It doesn't look like they pack up as good as the ole man, but definetly better than the summits. I like the smaller versions that pack really tight, and it looks as comfortable as the summits. I think I'm sold, gotta have one.

Thanks

SUMIT VIPER OR A SUMIT PYTHON THE BEST
Reply
In case you haven't noticed the other posts on the subject - GET A SUMMIT VIPER OR GOLIATH!

Goliath is a little bigger on the upper part (the part with the seat not where your feet go).

Snake, your comment on cables being noisy is way off when it comes to the Summit stands. You will not find one quieter, easier, or quicker to get on the tree and start climbing.

A lot of people like the Ol' Man stands but here's one drawback for sure. If you climb it on a skinny tree, you will be getting pinched around the kidney area when you sit down facing away from the tree (the way most people hunt). Look at how it's made with the seat/climber part and you'll see why this happens. The supports flex where they attach to the frame and will come in on you on a skinny tree.

The API's are pretty good, but there chain or whatever it is that goes around the tree is clumsy and not near as easy as the Summit.

I will also say this and get off the soap box. Tree Lounge makes a VERY comfortable and sturdy stand. They are unconventional but they work good. Even with the bow hunting adapter I would still prefer it for gun hunting only (my opinion). A drawback for them is they are expensive.

For the money you will not beat a Summit Viper or Goliath, but hey, it's your $$$ so get what YOU like!

I had a Summit Viper that was stolen, and I loved it. I cam across an Ol'Man and take that almost everywere because it packs tight and is light. A year or so ago "Tree Lounge" had a sale and were selling there lounges for $150 I got one and although it not the greatest to carry and attach to a tree climbing is easy and I can sit all day in that bad boy.

I like the API. It is about 25 pounds though. The base platform is real big and the stand is very comfortable.
Sabine pools in Gonzales has a tree trunk secured inside you can climb a little ways to see what you like.

I bought a Summit Viper X5 at the beginning of the season and am VERY Satisfied. I had an API and was happy with it too, but it was way heavier and not near as quiet. Summit is the way to go!!!!

I think I may try the Summit Viper, seems like that's the one most of you use, I will let you know the outcome.

I WOULD LOOK AT A STAND CALLED THE GUN SLINGER. THE WEB SITE IS WWW.JRHSPORT.COM. IF YOU WAIT UNTIL THE OFF SEASON THE GIVE YOU A BIG DISCOUNT. I HAVE HUNTED OUT OF MANY STANDS THE PAST TEN YEARS. WHEN I WAS HUNTING EARLY SEASON AS A GUEST MY BUDDY WHO BROUGHT ME LET ME HUNT HIS STAND (THE GUN SLINGER) AND IT WAS GREAT. I AM NOT A BIG FAN OF A STAND THAT FACES THE TREE BUT THE WAY THIS STAND LOUNGES BACK THE TREE DOES NOT EVEN PLAY A FACTOR. THE STAND IS EXTREMELY LIGHT AND DURABLE. HE HAS HAD THIS STAND FOR FIVE YEARS NOW AND THAT IS ALL HE HAS. 5 TO BE EXACT. I HUNT MOST OF MY TIME OUT OF A TREE LOUNGE BUT IT DOES NOT EVEN COMPARE TO THE SLINGER.

The gunslinger is w/o a doubt my favorite stand. I've been having one for the last 10 years. They are a little different now but not much. I can hunt all day out of this stand. Best money I've spent on a stand!!!

I have used both oleman and summit goliath. A good friend of mine swears by the Gunslinger. I am going to get one shortly. They currently have an off season discount of $50.00. Go to jrhsport.com for pictures and prices.

Lots of good stands out there and I am sure you will find one that fits the bill. There is a new design coming out this year by a company called TSC hunting products. I have not Idea what this new stand looks like or how it works but it is suppose to be a "Self Leveling" stand. The only particulars I know are that it will have a cable (no v bar) and will weigh 19 pounds.

Oh and last years stuff is 50% off the displayed price on their website.

Look at API stands, they are just as lite and i find that they bite into the tree alot better. Also has a chain instead of a cable.
