What is the Deal with All these Whisling Duck around St. James to St. Bernard Parishes? Could they even be shot? During regular season? What's the limit? They are taking over the swamp. Roosting in wood duck hole and pretty much any big tree's. they didn't used to be around, but the last 5 or so years they have Multipled by the tons!!

They can be part of your bag limit, lookup the regs. on them for your area.

Their true name is Fulvous Tree Duck. Most of the year they live in Mexico or South America. For years, they have migrated further and further northward and eastward across SW La.

Most people call them Mexican Squeelers in Texas and SW La.

Here's a link to info about them.

They are actually black bellied whistling ducks. Not Fulvous Tree ducks.

to be honest with you i dont have a clue. i talked to a friend of mine who is a ldwf enforcment agent and he told me that we werent allowed to kill then during teal season, that they were doing some kind of study on them or something. now that being said, i dont know if thats just in my area or not. it may be different across the state, i dont have a clue, i kill mine during the opening of big duck season, but as soon as the first really good front come in they are few and far between, there are alot of both species in st.bernard marshes right now. they make a really nice mount too, and they are good to eat also, they have big legs kinda like a small chicken leg, if you like to cook ducks whole, i dont like to breast mine.

Since both species of ducks come to us through Mexico it has been determined that no laws apply to them. Should the game warden check you and ask for your license just give him a 'no se habla' through your fake mustache and dark tan out of the bottle. You will be allowed to go free and continue your unrestricted hunt. Don't worry about ICE as they aren't interested in less then 10 or 12 illegals at one time. They don't do singles. Good hunting senores. Don't mention my name if any of this doesn't work.

It seems like I read a story a few months ago (maybe close to a year ago) about the whistling ducks. I think the story was in Louisiana Sportsman Magazine. If I remember correctly, the story says that hunters don't see them as much during the duck season because they take up home at several of the grain elevators along the river. The grain elevator properties sometimes have several thousand whistling ducks at a time spending time there.
