hmm...
Anything will work fine if you're not too worried about late evening/early morning shooting. As a general rule for a hunting rifle though, you pretty much should spend as much money as you can stomach to spend on a scope.

I am a Leupold man all the way, I have a Vari-XIII on my 30.06, but I bought the wife a .243 and didnt want to spend $600 on a scope when she doesn't hunt much, so I got her a Pentex Gameseeker 3-9X50 for around 200.00, and it stands up side by side in comparison with my leupold, also has the no questions asked lifetime warranty. Can't be beat for the price.

Go with he Pentax. I also have the 3X9X50 and it is great. I paid about $150 at Academy.

Nikon Pro Staff
Cabelas and Bass Pro had the Nikon Pro Staff on sale for a while now. The 3-9 x 40 is on sale for $99. You can not beat it for the sale price. The regular price is $150. I bought one for my 45-70 and I bought a 3-9 x 50 for $149 for my dad's 30-06. Both are clear.

Better Price
I'm a Nikon fan, you can look at Natchez Shooters supply, they sell refurbished Nikon scopes at a discount. You get more value for your money.

BASS PRO & CABELA'S
I don't think the sale is still on, but if so you can't get the refurbished scope at Natchez Shooter any cheaper......the refurbished scopes are great. They come with a 90 day warranty. I have about 6 or 8 of them, some new, some refurbished. The pro staffs in my opion pull light just as well as the buckmasters.
