I NEED TO GET RID OF HOGS

Reply

I have hogs everywhere on my place. I have three hog traps but they are getting wise to them. I have tried everything to get rid of them and running dogs really isn't an option because I am a trophy deer hunter and I really don't want to run my deer off. Has anyone tried building a hog pin of some sort that is designed to catch a whole group of hogs at once?

Hog trap
I can help. I could come to help set it up and to remove hogs. It is a bit of a drive so I couldn't just drive up there to check the trap.

Do you have a design in mind?

Hog dogs
Dogs are your best option. Hogs can get trap smart but not dog smart. They have some people on here with great dogs... they run hogs and don't trash chase on deer at all. Just wait till after deer season and ask people for hog dog removal on here.

I believe that the dog hunters disturb the deer more than the dogs. If you can get the dogs in the woods and not the hunters you are way ahead of the game.

If you put enough pressure on the hogs with the dogs they start to avoid the area.

I run dogs. Get with me if I can ever help you out, or if you'd like to tag along to see how it all works.

2 tips for trapping

Keep the trap portable and move it.

Keep the trap baited, but only set the trip every so often. That way the hogs are used to going in and out.

Man drives before the next season??
I really don't know but i am thinking if you could do man drives where you focus only on hogs, letting the deer run. Might need special permits. ?? Good luck

If you run dogs after the season it wont affect your deer at all, true hog dogs are not going to run a deer. But to answer your question, yes you can build a large trap and its really easy. Run you some hog wire around a bunch of trees.Use the same kind of trap door you would in a regular trap but put it between two trees. Then bait the back of the trap so the whole herd will be in before it tripps. If you build it large enough and put ALOT of corn they wont even try and escape but be ready to start shootin when you come in b/c then theyll go ape sh$@!!

Hog Trap
I have some friends that had the same problem trapping them. They eventually started building their traps out of trampoline frames. They get hog panels from the C0-OP and build a complete circle with a spring loaded gate. Since they are round the hogs will circle trying to get to the bait and you just flare a panel out at one point. The hog will push open the spring loaded door and this will allow multiple hogs in at once. They will be easier to trap as soon as deer season is over and there is not as much corn in the woods.

True hog dogs will not run deer and will not hurt deer hunting. If you get rid of hogs the deer will be there. We had to run parts of our lease right before hunting season and had deer back on plots the next day.

Good dogs don't run deer that is why they are hog dogs and not deer dogs! If you have them as bad as you say you do then traps and dogs are your best option, but they will get smart of the traps. Putting dog pressure on them will make them move, but they will come back as soon as you start feeding your deer again!! Good Luck

Figure 6
Amen on the real hog dogs dont run deer. Another option you have is a figure 6 take fence posts and hog panels, drive the post in a figure 6 pattern. where it comes together leave about 4-5 ft between the fence posts. When you put the panels on run them all the way and let them overlapp at the connection to the inside of the circle about 3 ft. hogs will push in but cant push out. we use this in our bay pens and it wroks really well. Also you can build a pen that is a complete circle with a slidding door. Drive 2 stakes in the middle of the pen and tie one to the rope for the door. Set the trip and pour corn over the top of it. By the time one of them hit it they will all be in the pen. diameter on ours are about 16-20 ft.
