Steel Shot

What choke/load combo works best for yall on passing ducks? I'm out of buck tags, so I've been trying to shoot passing woodies at the camp in the evenings, but have been fumbling around a little bit with what to use. I was using #4 xpert steel out of a modified choke, but couldn't kill em until I put about 3 loads in em. I got mad and started shooting kent fasteel 3' #1 out of either a modified or full. It gets em, but they are brutal to shoot and it takes a very good shot to hit a passing woody with that combo. I refuse to spend a ton of money on shells just to shoot passing ducks. What do you fellas find works best on some far and fast ducks? I'm thinking about trying black cloud #2 next...

Heavy Shot has a waterfowl choke and you get 2 chokes an extended range and medium range. I use heavy shot #4 with the extended range choke and was folding teal at 40 to 50 yds on the fly. I had a full choke before and it made a huge difference in range and killing power. Pattern Master also has a ckoke but with heavy shot you get 2 chokes for the price of the Pattern Master.

to be completey honest the #4 Xperts and modified will work just fine although i personally shoot Nitro steel #2's. Its all in having the proper lead to make a head shot or near head shot. I've seen MANYYY people shoot the Xperts out of modified or even imp cyl. and destroy ducks. If the ducks are flying far then you may want to go ahead and get you an extended range choke. For shells, yours will work just fine but black clouds and the hevi metals will work SLIGHTLY better, most people who can shoot well dont see a very big difference. If you keep shooting at them you will eventually find that perfect lead. Trust me you dont need all the bells and whistles. Practice makes perfect! And we all want to see some pictures when you do kill them!

I'm definitely not into the bells and whistles thing. That's why I refuse to shoot hevi-shot or any other extremely expensive stuff. I've killed them dead on occasions with 2 3/4' 4 shot, but it didn't happen often, so I know it can be done. I just can't shoot that good. I hit alot of them, but I didn't put many in the bag. The #1s really made a ton of difference. I either miss or kill, which is what I was looking for. I just don't think shooting #1s at wood ducks is necessary, so I'm looking for new things to try. I like the idea of some nasty looking saturn-shaped pellets.

Thanks for the input guys. I never duck hunt, so I don't get to try stuff out very often. Guess I'll focus more on trying to slow them down a little. Anybody know how to do that? It seems impossible!

Well,
If you get em' in your face within 25 yards then you don't need much. I look for the most economical shot possible. My favorite is 3' 1 1/4 oz. #3 shot in Winchester Xperts with a modified choke. I can get them for under $10 a box when they go on sale at Cabela's. #4's is just right for woodies.

At what range are you shooting?
I know I am going to be different to everyone else but I shoot an improve cylinder 4-7 shoot. If I am shooting teal (or woodies) in close range I would not have a problem shooting 5 or 6's.
Second day of the season I was hunting by myself (I get to pick the shoots) I used 2 3/4 low brass 6 shot that I bought to dove hunt on a WMA. I limited out in 10 minutes.

If you are shooting close shot I would promote more BB's not bigger. I want to say the last time I shot woddies passing in the woods I shoot 7.5 skeet load.

Passing Woodies
If you are close passing shots (withing 20 yds or so), you should be fine using 6 or 4 shot. If you find that you're crippling a lot of birds you might be shooting a little behind them and hitting em in the rump. Believe me, I shoot mostly teal and usually when I cripple a bird, I shot behind it. If you hit em int the head or neck they are going down no matter what you're shooting. Good Luck, and post some pics if you get some.

Black cloud shells
Try the Black Clouds, really got some knock down power. We normally shoot them for second split when the ducks are a little spooky. They go out and get um. Try some # 2 or 3.

I guess I'll go with the black clouds next. I can't figure out any way to slow em down or bring em closer; the only thing that seems to work sometimes is 2 or 3 wood duck decoys, or any assorted voodoo thing like unloading your gun, taking a leak, not paying attention, ect ect. The best thing I've found is to knock one down so the other ones circle back and come land by it lol. Thanks for the input guys. I think I'll go try to bust a few this evening.
