Several years ago, at Fouchoun, me and my lil' lady was heading out for some specks and reds.... An old black man was fishing off the bank near where my boat was tied up. We talked a bit while I was getting loaded up. He wished us good luck and me the same. We took off for a nice day of cathing hardy anything BUT hardheads.Did scratch up a couple flounder and rat reds.I threw back all the hardheads.
Later that evening upon getting back to the boat dock, the old man was still there fisihing. As I got unloaded I grabbed a couple softdrinks and shared a few minutes talking over cold drinks with the old fellow, talking about our day of fishing.
I mentioned we had cought a boatload of hardheads. He asked if I kept them and was going to eat them. I replied, no, threw them all back... His reply surprised but yet made me think..... He said ' You people throw back some of the best eating fish there is in the marsh.'
He said they taste just as good as any freshwater fried catfish. But yet, I followed the same traits as anyone else I had ever saltwater fished with and even my Dad,,, by tossing them back overboard or using them for crab fodder.
I was going to keep some the next day to try out, but the bad weather and a cranky ol' lady forced different plans, did turn the old feller on to some of our catch for which he was very grateful.
One of those memories that will stay forever, and I WILL skin the next hardhead I catch....!
