Some of the Lowrance HDS (High-Def System) 5 units come with Built-in Expanded U.S. BaseMap or Lake Insight™ or Nautic Insight™ (Americas) or Worldwide background map (non-Americas) High-Definition Insight™ Mapping Options (Americas) or Navionics World Background map (non-Americas).
If your unit has the Nautic Insight mapping, it is probably the best for the coastal Louisiana Marshes. The Insight mapping is Lowrance’s latest mapping software and is a blend of both nautical charts (NOAA) and their own type of topographical mapping. If you don’t have the necessary coverage and the detail that you want, you will have to get a supplemental mapping program.
Most if not all of the Lowrance HDS series units can also accommodate several supplemental mapping programs, which includes the optional Navionics® Platinum+ and Platinum chartcards with TurboView™ for worldwide coverage - as well as Navionics® HotMaps™ Platinum, Lowrance Hot Spots® PRO and LakeMaster® ProMaps (Americas) as well as several version of their Insight mapping.
You can check out the various mapping from the Lowrance web site.(www.lowrance.com)
The site allows you to actually view the type of coverage that each of the various map types cover and display, but to be sure, visit a stocking Lowrance dealer and ask to see the available programs on a computer screen or in a GPS unit. Then select an area that you visit and “zoom” in to view the displayed images to see if they suit your needs. Do your home work before going to the dealer. It will save you $ $ $ down the line.
The Nautic Insight HD – East, Part # 000-10041-001 is shown at a price of $299.00.
Use caution when ordering the programs. Some of the different Navionics programs only cover part of the Gulf of Mexico.
