Storm Surge

Reply
I went out to look at a blind for lease in Forked Island today. As per the Farmer he had 6' +- of storm surge on the fields. Standing rice stubble was there when the surge hit and the entire area (540 acres) is now dirt with no vegitation growing. We passed on the blind due to no feed in the area and will look a little further north and noth west in hopes of locating a decent section not affected by the storm. These farmers realy need some good consistant rains to move through and flush out the fields. Hopefuly for the birds and hunters things will turn in there favor so we can get some rice production back to the area.

Blinds are going from $3,000 to $5,000 in the area. My opinion a little high for no grain or wild grass and seed. I dont see the area holding the birds it normaly does with all of the salt water damage to the fields and lack of feed.

From what I have read some of the fields that were flooded by Rita will take years to recover. Drought plus salt in the canals where water is pumped from will be hell to get rid of. I agree with everyone else, and look elsewhere. I don't hunt too far from Vidalia and don't know BigScott from Adam but that area holds a lot of ducks, may be worth looking into.

BigScott, curious as to where near Vidalia you hunt. Please reply or send me an email. Would like to compare notes.

A friend of mine is from Vidalia, he practicly grew up on glasscock island and I have hunted turkey with him on the island. This area does hold birds. Im looking for something closer to home due to hunting every bit of time I have and being able to load up my son and daughter (my yellow lab) and head out when the weather is right. I have been hunting south of Gueydan for the past 13 years and lost my lease 2 years ago. I leased a blind between Riceville and Morse last year and didn't have much luck due to field being set aside. If anyone reading this has something for lease anywhere from Gueydan to Morgan City or within a hours drive from the Erath area please email me. Thanks anyway, ducknut

There were a lot of friends of ours that were left shaking their heads in disbelief when we told them our idea to open this business. The reason that we believe that they were surprised at first is precisely the fact that people are usually not too worried about their kitchen hoods.
