A couple of ideas
Can't argue with the 740s Garmin, but is twice the price range you inquired about and most do not come with transducer. Lowrance HDS 5 Nautic insight is around $700 and is great. Map included should suit your needs. Lowrance service leaves somthing to be desired, but most problems will be apparent before warranty expires.I just bought a Humminbird 597ci HD and the sonar is great, detail is amazing. GPS functions good too. It is at the low end of your price range, but you will want to add Navionics Map which will take it up some.

i have the garmin 740s it is a great unit you can plug radar and xm weather into it without needing to buy any thing else my unit is about a year old with the transducer i have $1700 in it

i also have a garmin 441 it is also a good unit it doesent come close to the 740s but it is a third of the price

i would not buy a lowrance all of my buddys that have/had one had problems with them mostly shuting down for no reason it does turn right back on but a little while latter they shut off again not good any time really bad at nite or in heavy fog

I have a 540S Garmin at the camp that is a year old and never has been hooked up, still in the box. It has no card in it of any area, you can get one of your area from west marine or a store like it. I'll ask $450.00 for it, it is at my camp in DuLarge below Houma and I will be down there this weekend.

I have the Lowrance HDS5 with Coastal Insight. Have been very pleased with it. I think all the brands out there are good. It just depends on what model you need for the use.

I bought a Lowrance Elite 5 about a year ago & very happy with it. Bigger screen than most in that range, easy to see in direct sunlight, good map detail & the best part very user friendly. $500 price range & actually Kim at Boats Unlimited in Baton Rouge gave me a better price than anywhere online.

Garmin makes a very good product. I have been using the same unit for at least 6 years, with zero issues. I had to call their customer service once for help in downloading software, and they were very helpful.

I have three garmin units now, the newest a GPSMap441s just put in the new bay boat and really liking it so far. Probably will eventually add the BlueChart G2Vision card to get the aerial imagery but overall they're units are definitely the most user friendly i've come across. customer service usually very good as well, can't go wrong. Found this unit online WITH the transducer for $500, shop around.

They Converted to a Garmin
I just purchased the Garmin 531s and it's easy to use and paid right under 700 with the transducer. I was a Lowrance man but have been converted due to the ease of the Garmin units.
