Primer bulb location w water separator

Reply
Installing a water separator on my 115 yam 4-stroke fuel line. Should the primer bulb be located from the tank to the filter, or from the filter to the motor, or does it matter?

Thanks, that's how my last boat was rigged as well. I'm going with that.

Got mine in between tank and water seperator with no troubles. Works out better when replacing filter to get the air out. Put it behind filter and u cant use the ball to push air out after filter change.

All filter/seperator manufacturers recommend that it be install between the filter and the motor.

Also my motor manufacturer recommended the same. I looked it up when I installed mine a few years ago.

Having said that, it's still your motor so do what you like.

I had an outboard mechanic tell me to do it that way. He said he has had many boats come in after owner changes water seperator filter and say motor dies halfway down canal because the whole system is not primed.

Mine is between the tank and the filter and most of the boats I have had were the same way , some where not for what ever reason such as you couldn't get to it -------- a lot of the heavy equipment I work on with diesel engines have primer bulbs or hand primer pumps and the bulb is between the tank and the first filter , I think it does do a better job that way of pushing all the air out the filter and it will show you a leak at the filter when you pump it , I have seen the anti siphon check ball that is built into the bulb on the inlet side get clogged up on diesels from algee or dirt , have never had that happen to me on a boat motor , I do always carry a spare primer bulb , fuel line , filters and hose clamps in the boat
