Pearl River Nav Canal Lock 1 launch

Reply

Guys i'm looking to head out to the Pearl River Navigation Canal and want to launch at the Lock 1 ramp (Lock 1 Road in Pearl River). I spent many years there earlier in my life but it's been at least 5-7 years or so since i've used that launch. Any chance I can launch a 21 bay boat there on a tandem axle trailer?

Supposed to take some relatives for a ride there this weekend but don't want to get to the launch and have issues. Any drop off issues I should know about? All I've launched there in the past was my 16' flat boat.

Thanks for any help, have a good 4th weekend.

very shallow
You should not have a problem launching your boat.Last hunting season when the river was at 4.9 feet i had to get out of my 14 foot flat and walk it through the mouth of the canal. The river is lower than that now.According to the river stages on this site its expected to fall even lower. I think you might want to go somewhere else until the water comes back up.

So you think I won't be able to get the boat off the trailer there? I didn't know it was that shallow in that area, but again haven't been in a while. I'll be coming from Mandeville so don't want to drive over there and have to turn right around and come back because it's a no-go. Thanks for your help

another location
You could try Davis or Crawford landing it makes for a nice boat ride and they have good launches. Its the same river but about 10 miles further south.

I don't think we're talking about the same water. Davis and Crawford are on the natural pearl river, west Pearl actually I think, muddy and it winds about. The Pearl Navigation canal at Lock 1 is straight and I want to launch and run north/northwest in it a couple of miles to see some property my family used to own, passing up the spillway dam and heading a bit further upriver toward the other lock(s).

same water
There is 2 launches at that location. There is 1 on the north side and 1 on the south side of the lock. The south side launch runs to the river. You will not have any trouble launching your boat there at either one

Lock 1
Hey, the launch your talking about is in good shape and yes you can launch your bayboat there. I was there just last week and about 4 other people launched boats like yours there with no issues. Also the bass fishing is pretty good on the canal right now.

thanks!
Thanks for the responses guys, we went today and all went great. Even stopped off at the old dam/spillway area for a few minutes. Everything there looked pretty much as it did when I was spending a lot of time there in the early to mid 90's at a family camp. FYI a couple of guys were tearin' up the bream and cats at the bottom of the spillway on crickets and catfish nuggets. Water in the river was pretty and I saw plenty of fish in the shallows. Happy 4th

ive been there many years ago too. off of hwy 41 in bush, LA. we camped in tents on the sand close to lazy j which was the north side launch. lazy j seemed closed, didnt want to take a chance so launched at public ramp. last i went was 2 years ago, alot of trees down since the storms, the slolam bouys were moved further south, but very pretty water and the waterfall/dam was just the way i remembered it. there was alot of new const camps/houses too. im only 33 but my dad took us there 2-3 times a summer to camp, ski, fish, etc. not many places like that around!
