Terrible story

Reply
I had to go to my dentist's office today, and in referring me to an endodontist he told me that the one I've used before had died last week - and I couldn't believe what happened.

Apparently Dr. Alan Sandifer was a big bow hunter, and was practicing in his backyard early last week.

He drew back, and the riser slipped out of his left hand, shooting the bow back toward Dr. Sandifer.

The cable guard apparently punctured his head, killing him.

That was confirmed when I went to his practice to make an appointment with one of his partners.

Just a terrible story! I know it was a freak accident, but be careful, guys!

That is bad news indeed. Prayers sent to the family. I put a little grip tape on my grip like the kind used to put on tennis rackets. It keeps your hand from slipping when you practice in the summer months when the sweat from your hand affects your grip. I felt my palm starting to slip last summer which is why I put it on.

I talked with one of Dr. Sandifer's partners in more detail this morning (while he was putting a tooth back together for me), and I learned that my earlier understanding was wrong:

Dr. Sandifer was working on his bow while it was in a bow press. He had it pulled to full draw doing something, and the riser came loose while Dr. Sandifer had his head between the string and the cable guard.

Makes more sense than if he was practicing, but it reinforces the fact that we need to be extra careful when tweaking our equipment!
