Cinnamon Teal or not

Reply

We did pretty well Saturday morning. Hit some we shouldn't have and missed some we should've hit.

After I breasted all my birds I noticed this one. After looking at it a while I think it is an immature Cinnamon Teal Drake. I think this because of the copper color all over the body. What do ya'll think?

I don't think
I would say its a young (first year) BWT. These birds will get their muture plumage later in the year. This bird looks to be in between the summer and his first winter plumage!

Blue wing
Yeah, a lot of people are saying Blue wing. Oh well, it tasted good anyway.

Cinn vs BW teal
Easiest way to tell the males apart is the eye. Cinn Teal drake will have a red eye after it reaches about 8 weeks of age. Hard to tell from the first picture but the eye does not appear to be red.

YOUR TEAL
AFTER CLOSELY COMPARING YOUR TEAL WITH THE ONE I HAVE ON MY WALL I AM OF THE OPINION YOUR BIRD IS NOT A CINNAMON TEAL. MY CINNAMON DOES NOT HAVE A GREEN FLASHING ON THE REAR EDGE OF THE WINGS & DOES NOT HAVE A HEAVY LAYER OF TAN/BLACK FEATHERS ON ITS CHEST. KEEP IN MIND THE CINNAMON I HAVE IS MATURE IN HIS FULL MATING COLORS. FINALLY, I SUSPECT YOU HAVE AN IMATURE BLUE WING.

Blue Wing
Definatley a blue wing, a cinamon teal has red eyes. Also, the orange or rust color you are refering to I believe has something to do with its diet and comes from eating duck potatoe. We shoot a lot of birds with that rust color on the belly. Glad yall shot some birds though, good luck the rest of the season.

Rust Coloration
Definitely a blue wing teal. The rust coloration on ducks actually comes from a fungus found on rice, known as 'rust' fungus. It will cause many types of duck's plumage to show a rusty orange coloration. It does not harm the animal and is not bad for the meat. I am of the opinion that it actually gives the bird some character and even makes for a better mount.
