All I can say is I had a great week this past week. Started out taking my nephew crabbing in Lake Ponchatrain and we caught 101 crabs according to the counter I bought him, more than 50 were giant number 1 males. Two days later my friend called just before lunch and asked if I wanted to try the sacalait ( a bad day fishing is usually better than a good day at work except for the pay) so off we went. At 6 pm we threw the towel in with 85 fish in the box 54 sacs and about 30 of them were bigggg slabs and the rest bass, goggle eye and a few bream and yellow bass. Spot will not be divulged as it is not my spot but I drove less than an hour from Metairie. I stayed in the first time in 25 years opening day bow season to take my daughter to the fair friday night and had a great time. Saturday evening found 3 does and a fawn feeding on acorns under me but it was their lucky evening as I don't like shooting does in the evening as it makes for a long and worn out evening and I was hoping for a pig, i wouldn't have been so generous. Sunday morning I had 6 dear come up a different ridge feeding on acorns and I chose one of the yearling does over one of the mother does with a spot. A quartering away pass thru 19 yards at 7:35 am. put the first venison of the year in the chest which ran only 55 yards. Did not see a single buck but I usually only see juveniles opening week anyway. This gave me a chance to do some preventative maintenance on the camp. What are your thoughts on shooting 15 month old does (94 lbs) versus older monarch does which the three I saw and had shots on all weighed between 110 and 120. The old monarch does have spots with them, local game warden said to get some does off regardless just need numbers removed. I would rather shoot a doe without a spotted fawn than one with.
