Morning hunt

Okay this might sound weird to many of you who have been in and out of the woods your whole life, but i grew up in the city and I am just starting out bow hunting. I want to go hunting in the morning and be in my climber before dawn. Without sounding like a complete wuss I was just wondering is it safe to go into the woods while it is still dark and what precautions should I take if any. Really wondering about bobcats and bears? I need the advise and help from all of you who have been doing this for forever so I can learn and one day pass hunting on to my son. Thanks

The 'amimals' aren't the problem you need to worry about. How comfortable are you in finding the tree you want to climb and have you used your climber in the dark? If you get turned around going in and have to walk around after daylight you will get frustrated and disrupt the woods you want to hunt and still won't be in your stand when you wanted to be. I believe your safety comes first and if that means waiting till first light, then that is when you go out.

SAFE :)
Chris, Don't ever be afraid to ask questions on here, cause most of the guys on here know EVERYTHING??? Seriously though, the woods are about 10 times safer than the City Streets before daylight. I think you have nothing to be afraid of or any danger concerns. The critters are more scared of us than we are of them, except for those darn Armadillos, when I bump one of them in the dark, it stills gets me hopping???

Good Luck,
Safe Hunting,
Tommy

You have nothing to worry about walking through the woods in the dark. The animals will see your light and hear you coming and will run. Bears wouldn't attack you unless you're messing with it's cubs. I've been hunting deep in public land all my life and have never been attacked, stalked (that I know of), or heard of any other hunters being attacked. You should be good to go.

You should not have anything to worry about if your woods are not to populated with wild hogs. I been in the woods all my life and never worried about anything in the woods and 2 years ago walking to my tree in the dark to make a bow hunt I got chased down by a hog in a very high populated hog area. I dont know why he chased me but just from insticts when he started running towards me I just took off running. When he got close to me he turned and ran the other way.

Hunters
Hey Chris, personally I'm more afraid of hunters out there than anything else. I'm new to bow hunting myself and I try to hunt bow only areas as a result of a few things that happened to me out here the last couple years. I hunt mostly mornings and got to tell you most people around here just make me nervous with a weapon in their hands. I suggest using a head lamp and blaze orange so they know you're a 'man', otherwise I ended up with people thinking I'm a hog/deer. I'm no master hunter, but I time when I get to the woods so I get there just before daylight. I used to get out even earlier and just freeze. Anything I ever see usually moves around 8-10 anyway.

If the weather's warm where you're hunting, watch where you put your feet. The snakes are still active.

snake boots and thermacell if its warm and a mini mag light or something so little timmy( who is tresspassing) with his new 20 gauge crack barrel wont send a load of buckshot your way- I preached to my sons that deer never walk on 2 ft are not 6 ft tall and dont wear orange and to see the whole deer or turkey and dont let your imagination run wild etc etc anyway I worry about people and mistakes more than any critter

fear
The only thing you need to fear is idiots!! A few years ago me and a buddy were walking to our hog spot(in the dark with no light) when all of a sudden we here someone unloading a gun and the muzzelblast is facing us!!We dove off the trail and I had to fire my shotgun in the air for them to hear us and stop! The fool said he was just shootin his pistol b/c he never gets too!! Watch out for the morons!

Don't worry , be happy
Big Foot , Skunk Apes , and the Luke Garu all are believed to be most active in the hours right before dawn , and the Foots and Skunks are believe to sense fear , they won't mess with you unless your a wuss , da' Garu is a different story that shouldn't be takin' lightly , theorologist theorize that Garus are attracted to the smell of Thermocel , so bottom line is the mosquitos are your worst enemy

Danger
I have been hunting since I was a little boy and have always gotten in the woods before daylight. Like someone else said snakes are still out right now and are most active when it is dark.

Snakes are the only real danger you need to worry about, unless you are like me and are a sissy when it comes to spiders! I always walk thru the woods holding my gun/bow out infront of me from walking into any spiders. Doing this also helps prevent you from walking strait into an eye-level branch that you may not have seen.

Nothing to fear but fear itself!
That being said ,You will probably piss your pants the first time you are walking down a trail and a wood cock waits till he is between your feet to flush. wish i'd had a camera that day.

I've been huning these swamps my whole life.... Now with that being said, everything is scary in the dark!! I was making an evening hunt a couple of years ago. My stand was about 40 yards off a slew and the bridge I had to cross was about 70 yards down the slew and my four wheeler was just across the bridge… At dark thirty, I when to pull my flashlight out my bag and the head of it came off… I couldn’t get it back on and the light was almost gone. I decided to get down pretty quick and make it to the slew… If I did that, I could find the bridge and the four wheeler in the dark. That I did and found the bridge and I thought all was good. While crossing the bridge I could hear something very loud in the leaves on the other side the bridge… I made noise thinking it would scare whatever it was off… it didn’t!! It sounded like a herd of elephants!! Then I hollered very loud and they stopped… for a second! Here I am in the leaves feeling around for my 4-wheeler and the elephants were right there.. I couldn’t see to shoot anything.. my hollering wasn’t working and I was breaking out in a cold sweat!!! I finally found my 4-wheeler and turned the key on to light my headlight… I turned the light to the noise and found 4 armadillos rooting around the leaves looking at me!! They seemed so vicious in the dark, but looked so harmless in the light!! Guess my point is to have several lights and not be in the dark. The only thing you really need to fear is the 6” of space between your ears… that’s the scariest place on earth!!

NOPD officer Thanks!
Man if you can handle the steets in the city you will be more than fine in any woods. Look, I would suggest looking into a Bowhunter education course or Hunter education course. They are invaluable! You always gain some new information and meet new hunting buddies. No need to fear anything in the woods. Snakes, spiders, hogs, bears, alligators, getting lost, ex-wife, whatever! The woodland animals are way more afraid of you I assure you. Other hunters are always a concern! Most are great but a few are not! I see you are in Madisonville. I am just right around the corner in Mandeville. Give me a shout sometime and maybe we can get together over coffee. You are on the right track as there are many fellow sportsmen that are more than happy to help you get going. Good luck to you and welcome!

'Loup-Garou'
...according to 'Gumbo Yaya' the Bible of folk lore, the Garou had big red eyes, long pointed noses and was covered all over with horrid hair.To banish a loup-garou,'Gumbo Yaya' suggest, throw a frog at him---bullets have no effect, but frogs make them nervous.(compliments of Marjorie Roehl T-Picayune Sunday,July31,1988)...

P/S ...always wait for safe light !!!...even 'Dracular' and his 'Werewolf' sidekick is in a hurry in 'da wee hours of morn'n ???...cheers ???

Dark woods
Hi Chris I work in and for the City also, but if you want to kill pigs! You must get in there before light always, Pigs move at day light and right before dark, and if you scout first and know where your going get there in you climber in the dark and let the woods settle down, The squirrel hunters will do the pushing early in the season, Sounds like you are in a good area if your seeing them, Get on a run or near a water hole their using, The only thing I worry about is snake's But remember Snakes are a pigs favorite food, they will hunt them. So first rule if you have good pig sign I don't worry!!!! And remember YOU are the badest thing in the woods!!!! Chow Happy Hunting and good luck!

Mr Fish...besides Thermocell, Grandpere said they do go for salty Chee Weez and chips when he goes back into human 'metamorphosis'...and the writer who spoke for Grandpere never signed his name to his prose, yet he sometimes hangs out in a high society joint somewhere in Lockport ???... while struggling with his seventh frozen mug !!!...cheers
