good shooter?
All depends how good of a shot you are. If you get a head shot everytime then the .17 is the way to go. If you hit the body every now and again then the .17 does to much damage.

I used A 20 GA PUmp 16ga Pump And 12 Ga My favoite was my 20ga I allways seemed to knock em down without blowing the mess out of them. I preferred a shotgun W/ dove and quail shot over a rifle for squirrel because it is easier to land a second shot if they where scamperring off. It does put some bbs in the meat you have to get out when you clean them, but the most went just under neath the hyde. My brother had a4-10 he did real good with too.

my 2 cents
I have shot thim with both & in my oppinion the 17 is a overated round. Its prolly good for ground hogs & gophers but I haven't seen many of them around lately...it tares squirrels up to bad, any small twig will send it astray, its not big enough for hogs, and the ammo cost a arm & leg. The only thing I've found that it works well on is crows, chicken hawks, & house cats. I'd go with the 22 long rifle ammo is cheaper and dont mess your meat up on squirrels.

I shoot a browning lever action. This allows me to shoot 'shorts'. Although i would prefer to make a head shot everytime, this is not realistic and body shots must be taken. The majority of my squirrel hunting is with my dogs and the head is not always exposed. The reason i prefer shorts are 1. my gun likes them and 2. is when the bullet makes impact in the body the majority of the energy is absored by the squirrel. Long rifle bullets are moving faster and pass thru with little energy impact. A friend shoots sub-sonics with sucess but my gun does not like them. Another friend shots standard velocity and clips the tip of the bullet off giving it a flat nose. The difference in velocity for sighting in purposes on the short range in which i shoot is insignificant. Good Luck.
