teal/big duck
during teal season youd probably want to shoot 2 3/4 - 3 inch 3 or 4 shot....Then during big duck probably move up to 3 inch or 3 1/2 inch 2 shot or bb....Im far from an expert but ive been hunting my whole life..im 19 and play baseball at uno so if you want to make a trip this year i can show you some stuff and tips

Whatever works for you
Try different shot sizes and see what you like. This is where you can save a ton of money, like me, compared to most duck hunters. I personally shoot the cheapest I can find, which has always been winchester xpert. I use the 2&3/4' low brass #6 for everything. When you can make your shots count and hit your mark, you can get away with shooting anything. Now if you are getting shot opportunities at geese while duck hunting, then I couldnt give my opinion because we dont really get any geese where I hunt. Good luck bra

Dude
that is the stupidest thing ive ever heard.....wow....low brass is lead shot...lead shot is illegal for waterfowl hunting---they dont make a low brass in steel so anything low brass and above 5 shot is lead....you really ought to conicder changing your load before you get a ticket

Re: Cutem777
Hahaha, that was a really funny response. I was just about to reply to the dude. Just goes to show you can't trust everything on the internet. This new duck hunter was about to go out and spray lead everywhere. Great intro to the sport.

Wrong
Since u are a whole 19 years, and know everything, I'm gonna have to call walmart and tell them to stop selling 2 3/4 #6 steel in low brass. They do make them, go see for yourself and they work.

I dont claim to know everything but i do know that they dont make steel in low brass....anything thats steel is high brass unless your buying shells from the 1800's i may be wrong..but im pretty sure im right on this one

Wrong again
give me your e-mail and i will send u a picture of some

fyi
they also make 2 3/4 #7 low power steel.

wrong or right but 6 shot on ducks seems a little crazy at least to me....I have trouble finishing off bull pintail with 2 shot and BB..but 6 shot? You shooting em 10 feet from ya blind?
Reply
try it
You are wrong. The smaller shot penetrates better, they are deadly on cripples on the water, I do prefer the hi power but u can't always find them, I'm on my second case of 2 3/4 #5, try it, u will be amazed.

like
like i said im 19 and far from an expert but i have killed more ducks in my life than most adults have...i respect your choice but im going to stick to the 3 or 3-1/2 and kill ducks on the initial shots, and save money by shooting less shells at cripples...just my 2cents....

its kinda like shooting a 22 at a coke can...sure that 22 is gonna penetrate and go strait through but what do you think a 7mm noslar partition would do to the same can
Reply
FYI
u act like an expert telling someone their advice is the stupidest thing u ever heard. The cripples i shoot are from people in my boat shooting #2, #3 and #4s. The smaller shot drops them.
Reply
so
so you just dont shoot ducks untill all your friends do then you just shoot thier cripples....i said 10 times im not an expert..there is a such thing as high brass steel shot...congrats i was wrong but telling someone who is new to the sport to shoot that isnt exactly smart advice...someone who doesnt know much might just grab high brass lead accidently and not know any better...just saying no ones arguing with you sorry for calling your advice is stupid im just saying you never know how people are gonna take or misinterpret your advice

Austin23, u can get a couple different shell and pattern them with your gun, all guns shoot shells different. also there are several different forums dedicated to duck hunting with tons of info, just google duck hunting forums. Learn as much as u can, the learning process never stops.....good luck.

shells
Depends on where u hunt and what kind of ducks u shoot. I killed my first greenhead in '68. I promise i've killed more greenheads with low brass 8's than u ever seen. 20 pellets in the neck and head will kill better than a ballistic tip to the wing. Put those in a 32in. full choke and great for cripples. This is in flooded timber, hunting in open fields or lakes, high brass 6's are death.

Stupid?
Wow! Who's the stupid one? Dude you didn't even know lo brass steel was made! Y'all mofos got a lot to learn. If you can hit the ducks, the lo brass 6 or 7 brings em down and no need for follow up shots. I dont make too many posts on here, but kill hundreds of birds yearly all with lo brass steel. Go ahead, look at my past posts...... All killed with $6.59 lo brass steel. Do we still know everything or 19 years old isn't old enough to man up and admit you were wrong!

6's
You would be suprised at how dead 6's knock 'em!I promise i shoot less than the guys that use 1's and 2's in the blind with me. It is all about pattern density, number of pellets in the neck/head/lungs. I shoot 2 3/4 6's through teal and 1st split, sometimes I use 4's late in 2nd split, on old wary birds, but never anything bigger on ducks. You aren't the first person to laugh at the mention of the use of 6's, but they usaully shut up when the ducks start falling stone dead!

yep..... they are all right... i just took a challenge that said to up your choke and drop down in shot size and see if your accuracy doesnt inprove... i went from modified choke with #2's to a full choke with #4's and my accuracy went from 60-70% to 95% so far..... i have had three hunts ina row now where ive shot one shell per bird!! talk about saving money... just try it.. its pretty incredible... good shells
I like Black Cloud #4 in 3 or 3-1/2 inch depending on what your gun fits.

Great tip.
I have a benelli Nova too and the best shell to knock em dead is fiocchi 2 shot 1 1/4 oz 1320fps. You can buy them online and it only takes 2 days to get them from www.cheaperthandirt.com. If you buy them by the case, they are only around 11 dollars a box. If you buy them by the box they a little more due to shipping. But, that is the best pattern that I found shooting my Nova. Good luck.

I have been shooting these xpert #6's all year and they shoot better than any shell I have shot since I was reloading lead shot for my dad in the 80's. I shoot a full choke 30' remington wingmaster and yes I can shoot them at 10 feet. I don't need bb and #2 shot because I can call them in and take good clean shots that kill.

People think since they shoot 3.5' shells that they can shoot the skyscraping birds. That shit is what is making this sport become less and less interesting.

Austin, did you get your ticket in Lake Bouef? I know it is the end of the season, but I can give you a few pointers. What type of gun are you shooting, barrel length, choke? All of this comes into play.

BB
We have been shooting modified chokes with BB and 2 shot, but just recently switched to full choke with 4 shot and am liking the change so far....and I kind of agree with you but kinda dont in a way...we shoot 3-1/2 inch BB because we hunt catahoula lake and we were getting tired of drawing feathers on these big BULL sprigs up there and never knocking them down...once we up'ed it to 3-1/2 inch bb and 2 shot we started knocking down more birds

Let em come in
I guess it all depends on how and when you shoot. I let em come in the decoys and pick up to shoot, right before they land. All they can do is climb and can't get out of range in time. The lo brass brings down the mallards and the sprigs! I understand if you are hunting an area where the birds are over pressured and can't get them to come in good. It doesn't mean you HAVE to shoot. Pass on the far shots if you have to. It's better to leave them flying than to criple and lose ducks.

Nova
I shooting the same gun with 3.5 black cloud or the new blind side winchester makes. The black clouds work the best I think. And I can't believe your friends won't take you duck hunting. I love getting a new hunter addicated to quack!

I guess you'd have to hunt catahoula lake to understand truly lol...there is no such thing as really letting them come in and picking your shots, Dont get me wrong some birds decoy but most give you a few passes then move on to somthing else

Yea bra, I talked to a guy I know that hunted Catahoula. He was telling me about the thousands of people hunting and sky busting them 3 shooters. He said it's mostly passing shots due to extreme pressure. That blows! I say they should pass a federal law that one hunter can not possess more than 10 shotgun shells. It would be amazing how much better the duck hunting every where would get.

I hear ya
We definetly dont sky blast by any means, but with all the people that do out there they get really warry....we take all ethnical shots they are just further than your average teal in the decoys lol

Take him up on his offer. Venice has been a hot spot this year and some really nice ducks coming from that area.
I have several Pintails from customers all coming from the Venice area. that is a great offer and a very generous offer to say the least.
Good luck.
