Youth Shotgun Recommendation

Reply
My son is 10 and weighs about 75 lbs.

Any suggestions on the appropriate shotgun based on his age and weight. I've looked at the Mossberg Mini and Bantam 20 qa. The mini is nice and has 3 stock extentions as he grows but the barrel cannot be changed. It is 18 inches. The bantam has the same extensions but obviously a bit larger.

Can anyone provide info based on their experiences with their kids?

what fits the kid? will a Remingto 870 youth fit hem/her? If not, the mossberg mini is the way to go

My kids have 2 Remington youth 20 gauge pumps that we bought at Academy. They rust easy if you don't keep them oiled but other than that they have been great guns for the kids. They have killed many ducks with them so far. Look at yesterdays post...

I just bought my 9 yr old son the Mossberg 510 mini from academy. He really likes it. He's a fairly timid kid so i thought the smaller gun wouldn't be as intimidating. He handles it well because of the smaller size. Its lighter than the remington and the bantam. He seems to like it, so im happy with the decision.

I bought my son a Hatsan/Escort 20 Gas Auto with a 24' barell at Academy for $300 2 years ago when he was 7. Absolutely love this gun for him. It came with stock extensions too. He shot a 410 for a month or so then went to this auto. Gas autos kick a lot less than the 410 or pumps too. When he first got the gun I only gave him one shell at a time. Last year he had 2 shells and this year he is now 9 years old and shoots 3 shells. He can knock the heck out of ducks within 35 yards with #6 steel shot. This is his 3rd season shooting this gun and we have had no problems with it. I highly recommend a youth 20 gauge gas auto for children or ladies.

My son is now 58' tall and weighs 87#, but this gun fit him well when he was much shorter and lighter too.

Weatherby makes a 20 guage semi auto with a 26 or 28 inch barrel. my buddy bought a 26 inch for his 10 year old daughter. Gun is not heavy and does not kick. Designation is Weatherby SA-08. Check the Weatherby website or Gunbroker.com. 12 or 20 guage runs about $399. Moderate price for a gun that is dependable. Buddy of mine bought 12 guage with 26 inch barrel and he loves it. 3 inch in 12 or 20 with 4 choke tubes. hope this helps. Good luck.

My son has a bantam. Great gun. Got a rubber recoil pad on it that lenghtens the stock. It is my favorite gun to rabbit hunt or shoot wood ducks with. He shoots it for everything except deer. I think you can get a sabot slug barrel for it too and make a short range deer slayer with it too.

before I got my remington 887, i was shooting a hatsan/escort youth shotgun. I have been using it since 2007. It has great knock down power. i shot 3 grey ducks with 3 shots in one setting.
