You are right, no predators can outnumber their prey. Also, not only do predators know feeders are a likely place to find food, deer also know this and avoid them as much as possible. Deer are not helpless bambi's, they are very good at defending themselves and coyotes know this. Ask yourself this, would u rather rassle and kill a bull for a steak, or eat tender chunks already ready to eat? Coyotes are masters at hunting rats, gophers, voles, and ground squirrels, so why should they risk injury trying to kill something 3 times their size? Their sharp noses and pointed paws as well as their huge ears allow them to hunt these animals even under the snow, locating them by sound and then pouncing on them.
