Deer dogs

New bill proposed in Mississippi legislature for all Deer dog hunters to obtain permits for deer dog hunting. Any dogs caught on neighboring properties or out of the permitted property will receive tickets and fines. Fines in upwards of 200$rnWhat do you guys think?

A similar permit system was tried with a huge success for landowners around the homochitto national forest last year.
This bill would constitute the entire state public and private land.

Enough..
This dog hunting debate has been a ongoing issue for years. Everyone is entitled to their own opinions. IM GOING TO KEEP THIS SIMPLE.. IF THE BASHING AND THREATS CONTINUE YOUR COMMENT WILL BE PULLED AND YOU WILL BE DISCUSSED FOR REMOVAL OF THE LAS SITE. I have spent over an hour this morning editing and pulling comments. Debate with out the profanity and threats..
ancient war tactic
Its called divide and conquer. Decimate the deer herd, get different groups fighting over special seasons, make so many restrictions u can never be sure ur legal. Too much trouble, stop hunting, no need for guns, no need to fight to keep them. The refuge and park rangers are totaly against hunting now, i cant believe the harrasement people have to put up with now to enjoy public land. When we had lots of deer people would let u hunt just about anywhere, now its like gold mines. Its amazing how so many people that never hunted with dogs condemn it.

Offensive.
Bullbowfin your comment is offensive. From where did you move here from? Hunting with dogs is just as much a tradition here and MS as eating gumbo. Don't think this dog permit will stop with deer dogs; no sir, you will need a permit for your inbred retriever next, and your rabbit dog, and your mutt at your house; which by the way was probably somewhere in the midwest, shall we say Indiana? Am I close?

Hunting Dogs
We need to tread carefully on this, a large majority of my deer hunting was done with dogs although I still hunt now. Read the above post and there are a lot of good points, watch out what you wish for your hunting practice's may be next on the chopping block. As for killing a a mans dogs, that can only end very bad.

$$$
When I first read this post, my first thought was the revenue. It still is, Deerman24 is right. Also, the MDWFP and the Ms.legislature need to also include HOG DOG HUNTERS. They will follow their dogs for miles through private property without any consideration for the landowner. They need to be included in this proposed rule!!!

Sounds great to me.
Dogs ruin our hunts routinely and in general push deer off our property. The owners say 'we can't control where the dogs go' If we get laws like this here, they better at least start trying, because I would be reporting dogs on our property. If dog hunting is what you do, great, just keep them on your land and not on mine... simple.

dogs
I'm all for it! I hunt on a small acreage and dogs frequent the area messing up my hunts. The problem is that the owners seldom lock up the dogs and are free to roam and chase deer.

Thoughts
I think it sounds great, in my opinion its not taking away anyone's rights, rather protecting others. No one should be told not to dog hunt, but just like there are still hunters who trespass, there are dog hunters who setup intentionally to run dogs across other's property. I have experienced an equal share of both, but while people can get ticketed for tresspassing, nothing will stop a dog crew from running someone else's land. I don't think this will solve the problem entirely, but its a step. I support it

Tracking
I just wish they would pass a law that you must have a tracking collar on your dogs!Lots of dogs are being found left in the woods!

deer dogs
good news for the still hunters in the homochitto, not many dog hunters are there anymore with the new law, except for me! NO, i dont think its right for our dogs to 'ruin' yalls hunts and trespass. but you could kill some deer in front of our dogs when they come on yalls land if you new anything about deer dogs, some landowners by us dont mind because they know where there deer will cross on there land and after they kill a few deer they love it. we run the same spot everyday for a week at times because we know just where the deer will go so we can cut our dogs off. and each morning there is deer the same place we ran the day before, they come right back. not telling anybody to love it im just saying you dont know what yall missing. and to the ones over by bunkley riding up and down the roads picking up dogs that where never on your land, yea we have garmins and know right where you picked the dogs up. and if they do go on your land, call wl&f, ill take a ticket watch out when you shoot a dog.

DEER DOGS
Well I will tell you most folks still run walkers for deer hounds, I have walkers mine are coyote/fox hounds I wont have one that runs a deer, but I am a deer dog hunter I run beagles like most on my lease. They dont push the deer as hard and they are easier to cut off and handle most of the time. We dont have issues because we run beagles on deer. Think about it!!!!! The in fighting will ony bring us all down!!!!

Joe Bob
Hey Joe Bob I'll tell you where they teach dogs not to cross a property lines if you tell me how it's right for dog hunters to steal deer off neighboring properties by allowing their dogs to run all over them, trespass constantly claiming to be looking for your dogs, and leave your dogs in the woods for weeks at a time to starve to death, while at the same time threatening any person who may do harm to those same dogs.

I don't mean to bash EVERY dog hunter out there, just every single one I've ever encountered.

training
If you can train a dog to do field trials with a whistle and a hand signal....then you can also train a dog to turnaround and come back or stop with a whistle or echo collar. Enough said.

TRADITION!
I have a good friend right now that is fighting for his life, he is a older guy in his seventies and he is a die hard dogman, he lives for it,he is the last of a dieing breed. He's not out to ruin anyones hunt and could care less about killing a deer he just loves to hear his hounds run. I myself prefer to still hunt, but have joined him on quite a few dog hunts and they are some of the most memorable hunts of my life. I realize its not for everyone and no one should have there hard work or time and money go to waste. Its just like with anything else u will always have people that have no respect and ruin it for the people that do.But be careful when throwing ur stones, u are shedding a negative light on something that is part of our history, something that ur fathers and grandfathers cut there teeth on.Ive had the oppurtunity to spend time with alot of theses old school dogmen and you can learn more from them about deer in a afternoon than all of these internet hunters combined, myself included, dont take them for granted. My friends name is john 'Spoon' barray, please keep him in ur prayers.

Spoon
Good luck to mr. spoon. Hope to see him back up at the camp soon. I agree lot can be learned from the ol timers than some of these guys who prob can't wander off a road without a GPS are a map. Hunted with dogs my whole life and love it. Killed a 153' deer this year in front of walkers on our lease and a nice eight. Spoon seen the bigger one. Prob i have is people think they own the deer on there lease and they don't. Where i hunt we have more land than any club around us and we get along fine with the still hunting club that borders us. Don't know where some of you guys hunt but i have never seen dog hunting done the way you all describe it. And just so you know deer don't run off from dogs have pics of the 153' buck for last three years in same spot that is hunting with the dogs at least three times a week when season is open. I have nothing against any type of hunting to each his own and wish everyone was that way. goodluck to all of you

Dogs and Oil
I think the reason this issue gets heated is because dog huntin is a rooted tradition just like the mineral rights in Ms.But what people fail to mention is that the cost of land has gone up since 1930 in Ms and people are just asking for more respect for their investment and not wanting their land ruined from dogs or (locations)on their property without permission or justifiable compensation.JUST MY .02.

should be illegal
It's horrible how these Hunters that use dogs (in Miss) have no respect. They know they can't walk on your property but there is no law against them releasing there dogs on to your property and run the deer towards them. We pay alot of money and time to our property and fields to have this kind of thing happen ain't right I wish it was illegal to hunt with dogs.

Hog dog runner hunters!!
I don't know if they'll ever pass a statewide deer dog law like they did around the Homochitto Forest. But, if they do, I hope they include hog dog runners along with them. I get more abuse from them on my property than deer doggers. Good luck!!

It's not just dog hunters
Let me start by saying I do not run deer dogs and do not plan on starting. I doent understand why some people blame dog hunters for everything. I understand they are probly guilty but still hunter do the same thing some people act like if they band dogs no one would trespasser, no one rideing the trails while they hunt, etc. While your wrong you will still have all the same problems. But this is where I thing people wrong for wanting to do away with dogs. Still Hunter have the part of the season it's called STILL HUNTING ONLY, then at the very last of the season the dog hunter get to do their thing, so leave them alone maybe the law should be deer hounds only then we would'nt have this problem. So to all the still hunters out thier just be happy because we can hunt during thier season(deer dog) and they can't hunt our season (still hunting only). And to the land owners the dog doent hurt anything the deer will come back after the dogs leave they allways do. Coyote's harm your deer population but you doent do anything about that, but you will talk bad about a hound I doent understand.
