CVA EILTE STALKER 35 WHELEN

Reply

I JUST BOUGHT THE CVA ELITE STALKER IN THE .35 WHELEN. THIS GUN WILL NOT GROUP THE HORNADY 200 GRAIN SUPERFORMANCE ROUNDS AT ALL. I HAVE SECURED ALL SCREWS FOR BASES AND SCOPE MOUNTS WITH LOCKTITE AND STILL THE GUN WILL NOT GROUP THE HORNADY ROUNDS. IF ANYONE ELSE HAS THIS GUN, ANY SUGGESTIONS ON OTHER AMMUNITION WOULD BE APPRECTIATED. THANKS.

scope
is ur scope a buckmaster pro-staff? I had same problem with a 444 and come to find out the prostaff is a 2 piece design scope and it couldnt handle recoil. I changed to a buckmaster scope and problem solved, never changed bullets. I also shoot hornady

ammo
That is the exact ammo my brother-in-law shoots out of his 35 CVA elite stalker and his shoots it very well. I have the elite stalker in stainless fluted going to sight it in this weekend with hornady 175 grain. I will let you know how they do. If you look online the superformance 200 grain is pretty much the most popular and liked caliber for the 35 whelen though.

are you shooting no more than 3 round at a time. and then let cool fully?
I have used the Barnes Vortex 180 gr rounds with good success.

I have a CVA Apex. These rifles are very finicky and each gun tends to prefer a certain ammo over another. I know it sounds weird, but I've done the research. I attempted sighting in with 180 gr. Barnes and they were all over the place. I switched to a 200 gr. federal and was able to sight it in with good groupings.

Lots of people are having this problem. You are not alone.

Had this same problem with the same gun last year. Try the federal fusion 200 gr. It's a tack driver now.

I am only shooting one round every ten minutes, then running a bore snake after the second round, so a hot bore probably isn't the problem. The scope is the Nikon Prostaff 3x9x50, but i have this scope on a .444 and have had no issues with the scope regarding recoil. I picked up a box of Federal Fusion 200 grains and will try this tomorrow. Hopefully that works, if not, I'm changing the bases and rings.

hornady 180 Grain
Have the exact same weapon. Stainless steel barrel and exact scope. Here is what I find weird. At 50 yards I was shooting high and lots of recoil. I added a lamb saver, awsome now. moved back to the 100 I was shooting to high and dailed it in the black! Moved back to the 50 and in the black as well????? Go figure. Going to she what see does at 200 yards later this week. Keep in mind 180 grain Hornady. I get good groups. I'll post later.

I have the same set up and the same problem as you are having I was told to try the barnes vortex 180 grain see if that helps but i need to find something and fast.

Hornady
I have the same gun and after trying the superformance, barnes and doubletap and having the same problem you are, i tried the hornady 175gr customs and it splits holes at 100 yards now. I read they are almost like a muzzleloader in that they prefer only certain types of bullets and they were right.

I have this gun in thompson center and have had the same problem. I have also tried the barnes, doubletap, and Hornady 200 grain. I have not been able to get better than a 1 inch group at 100 yds. Where are the 175 grain Hornady's available at???

Better than 1' group at 25 yes?
Lost me on this one. 1' group at 100 yards usually means you are finished sighting in, time for a beer! Unless you are shooting in competition and not hunting.

I HAVE TWO TC PRO HUNTERS IN 35 WHELEN THAT YOU CAN NOT HIT A REFRIGERATOR AT 100 YARDS WITH THE HORNADY AMMO. TWO DOZEN MEMBERS IN OUR CLUB HAVE EITHER CVA'S OR TC. THEY ALL HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM WITH THE HORNADY AMMO. EACH AND EVERY MEMBER IS USING REMINGTON 200 GR. AMMO. I'M NOT A GUNSMITH BUT I BELIEVE IT HAS SOMETHING TO DO WITH THE HEAD SPACING ON THESE TYPE GUNS AND THE DEPTH THE CARTRIDGE SEATS IN THE BARREL AND THICKNESS OF THE HULL. THE REMINGTON AMMO GROUPS VERY WELL AND THE MORE YOU SHOOT THE TC'S THE BETTER THEY GROUP.

I have been hunting with the CVA 35 whelen for a coulple years now with out any problems, always shooting remington 200gr ...never a problem with grouping, stops them dead in their tracks every time!! all though wouldnt have problems with shooting a i inch group @ 100yrs with a 35 whelen when hunting though!

Yes but i like my bullet holes touching as is the case with my other rifles. Until I switched to Doubeltapp ammo which is $58 a box, the whelen shot all over the target. Since you all have had good groupings with the remmington ammo, I'm try that. Its cheaper to.

What is the furthest you will shoot with the 35 whelen. I know everybody has shoot at different yards, but just an idea. say 100 or 150 is the best with the 200 grn bullets.

RESPONSE TO SF49ERS
If all your guns shoot groups small enough the bullet holes touch I would buy a good gun safe to keep them in. They are very special. Good luck with your 35.

Re: CVA EILTE STALKER 35 WHELEN
I use the Barnes Vortec bullets in 180 grain. My gun will group within 1/2' at 100 yrs. Love it. It's the only gun I hunt with now.
