One Strange Bird

Reply
A buddy of mine killed this bird and we are trying to figure out what it is. Somebody help us out and identify what it could be. Thanks for the help!

Looks a lot like the wood duck's Asian counterpart, the mandarin duck. That would make a sense, since it was flying with woodies. Google images of the mandarin duck and see what you think.

Whatever it is, I would be willing to bet that it's not indigenous. Probably escaped from captivity.

Check out the wikipedia page for the mandarin duck: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mandarin_Duck

Apparently their are feral populations in a few places in the states, making it at least feasible that one could have hitched a ride with a group of woodies into Acadiana.

Thats a Mandarin Duck. Its part of a species called Perching Ducks, Wood ducks are the same. Very rare for this part, you should def get it mounted. Thats a trophy

Supposedly there's an established population of Mandarins on the Northshore. I believe they were the result of a farm escape after Katrina.
