When my son was 8 he started with a .44 magnum H&R. .35 is the choice now. It kicks. If you want very little recoil and a great 100 yard shot, try the .44 magnum with a 3x9 scope.

35 whelen
If the 35 whelen is legal for primitive hunting and the shooter could hande a little punch it would be far superior to any other choices and it would be a gun he or she could use for life.

Recoil
45-70, .444, .35 wheelen. All have a good bit of recoil. If you choose one I would get a lamb saver for the buttstock to asborb some recoil. They are all good weapons. They main question is the ability and confidence in shooting the weapon. If the shooter is scared to shoot it after firing it, then it doesn't matter. Remember a crack barrel, single shot shotgun with a slug is considered a primitive weapon as well. 410 guage and up. Also my nephew shoots a .357 rifle that has less recoil. Many options , I suggested finding some friends with some of these weapons and get some practice in with them. But nothing spoils a young shooter than bad recoil.

Guns that kick!
Recoil is overrated, My 8 year old Nephew did his first deer hunt this year. I took him to the camp over the summer to shoot the .243, the gun kicks but not like the weapons referred to in his thread. My point is that he was so scared of the kick, he could not even put the gun on paper at 50 yards, I was cocerned that he would not hit a deer at all. Well, we hunted the youth weekend and not only did he smoke the big Doe behind the shoulder, I asked him, how was the kick, he responded, 'I didn't feel a thing.' When that deer presents itself to a young hunter, the kick of the gun is the last thing they will think about. Sight the big guns in yourself and let them shoot .22 rifles in the off season to get the fundamentals of shooting down. Put the big guns in their hands for the hunt and I think they should be fine. After all my wife of 110lbs shoots both the 35 wheelen and the 45-70. Good luck hunting.

Gun
Without a doubt, 44 magnum. My son has killed 2 and so has my nephew. Nephew smoked a doe at 126 yards. Ammo is cheap and easily found as well. The only other round I would consider is a 357. There is ZERO recoil on both of those guns and deadly on deer.

a youth hunter can hunt with any firearm during primitave weapon season. They are not limited to 'primitive weapons'.

For the lady...if she has any size tell her to man up and shoot the 35 whelen if she is kinda fragile ya might wanna go with the 44 mag.
