Redfish Jackpot?

Reply

I am thinking about starting a Redfish Jackpot tournamnet like every other Friday. It would basicallybe a bass style tournament for Reds. I am wondering if anyone would be interested? It would be out of Dulac, probably the Ashland Boat Launch. We could use other launches too. I was thinking $25 a boat. A 2 man team or you could fish solo. It would be from either 1pm or 2pm to 5:30pm. As it gets later in the year we could move the time back as the days get longer. We would weigh in the top two fish from each boat in the slot from 16'-27'. I'm trying to decide if I want to have the fish alive or not.

Anyways I am just trying to see if I can get enough people interested.

too much change
your going to end up making a whole lot of change that way so do $20 or $30 so its all tens or twenties and its a lot easier that way.

just my opinion but stick with the 1-2 pm weigh in, you dont want to be dealing with skeeters and leaving late like that with a long drive home in the dark.

asking for ''live'' fish means you eliminate a lot of boats that arent rigged with livewells and if you dont want the fish to be kept then its an honor system (good luck with that when money is envolved) or add a random draw where there is a witness in each boat, it could even be made up of bank fishers who wouldnt get to fish from boats normally or just have all passengers on boats made a random draw so you dont know who you might fish with and that could be great learning and teaching experience for all.

Thanks keaker
Thanks for the advice but I was wanting to have it later in the day that way people could still work half days on Friday. (As I will be). Also the live fish was so people couldn't bring in older fish like you said but I currently don't have a working livewell on my boat but I have an aerator pump and I was going to hook it to an ice chest temporarily. So I would think someone else could do this as well. The money thing is still open to i was just not wanting it to be too expensive. I am wanting this to be a fun just like Friday evening thing. Not wanting it to get to serious but like you said with money involved........ Anyways I have a bunch of rules and other details I'm thinking of if it actually gets up and running.

Would you want to fish in it?

the bigger the fish the more oxygen it needs, you might keep bait alive but not keeper fish and certainly not a redfish.

even if you did manage somehow to keep 1 redfish alive if you added another then both would die.

only a good livewell that has water flowing in and out can keep enough oxygen to keep the fish alive, i understand the idea but a buddy system is much more practicle.

thats why i had the idea of two people who dont know each other in the boat then they watch each other and neither one can cheat.

there will always be cheaters and no method is foolproof but i dont see the live fish as being doable without a working livewell. just keep it to one launch (so nothing can be brought there from a freezer and check all boats at the dock before everyone leaves to go fish. its the only way i see you can oversee there is no cheating

dont worry about keeping them alive as there are plenty of people who will eat slot size redfish (myself included).....also, i'm sure some local restaurants would love to have some fresh redfish if nobody else wants them.

ps--i would be interested in fishing that when i am not offshore (which is not that often lol)

Are you willing or not.....
I think it's doable in an ice chest. You might need to change the water once but the tournament is only about 3-4 hours. As it gets warmer it would be more of a problem. Plus if it doesn't work then I guess you'll have to have a livewell. Also if someone wants to use another launch I don't have a problem with it as long as they bring the money to Ashland first and are back on time with live fish. That just takes away fishing time from themselves. You can't pull a live fish from the freezer. I want to believe in the honor system working for most people. We aren't talking about $1000's just maybe a couple hundred. I know there are some bad apples but I think most people can be honest. But again that's why I want live fish.

I am really just trying to see if I can get enough people interested to make this feasible. We can work out the details later.

Thanks

I'm only worried about having them alive so I know they were just caught. You can take them home if you want. Shoot you can have mine. I just want to be sure they were just caught. You can even keep your limit of 5, or 10 if you're with your buddy, but you just weigh in the 2 you want that are in the slot.

Thanks rrrrrat red

What about some kind of measure system with a scale and photos? And to keep from using old pictures, at the start of the tournament hand out a piece of paper with the date or a random word/picture for the day to take in the picture with the fish. This way people could catch and release if wanted.

Lets do it!
I always fish that area and think it would be fun to get a little tournament going. I'm ready when you are.

Good
Thanks for the advice epa. I like it. It could be something a boat without a livewell could do. We would just have to make sure they have a digital scale. Would you want to fish in the tournament?

Thanks beau. Ill try and keep a list of people that want to do it and hopefully we will get enough people to make it worth while.

Thanks again guys.

I'm Down
You can count me in for twice a month. I would do it every week but gotta fly south for the money.

not wanting the fish
it sounds like some dont like to eat redfish so i suggest you look into a charity thing to give unwanted fish to a church or community organization, someone who will use it for feeding the needy or to do good. there are a lot of people barely getting by on fixed incomes that i bet would love to get those fish and have a good meal.

'Live fish'
I plan on letting go the fish people don't want. That's why they are alive. So you aren't killing a bunch of fish people don't want. Thanks

Thanks dude in tha white boots. I only plan on doing it twice a month (every other week) anyway.

When I can ill come act a donkey with y'all!!

I would do it
Sounds like a good idea. Here is a thought. Donate the fish to a local charity. This way I can feel good after taking y'all's money!!!!!

Seriously though donating the fish would make us all feel like we have done some good. I know I run into a problem with having to much fish in the freezer. I usually end up giving it away anyway. Plus who could give away an old fish and sleep at night. Might keep everyone honest.

Let us know when you have all the details worked out.

I like it!!
I like the thought process you have going right now, and the support you have backing you. As far as the keeping the fish alive thing, it is not a problem at all if you use an ice chest. I fish the IFA(Inshore Fishing Association), LASS(Louisiana Saltwater Series), and multiple other tournament series and all we use is an ice chest. We have your basic bilge pump as an aerator, and recirc the water back around. the ice chest keeps the water cool also during those hot days.

I'll fish it when I can. You might consider alternating boat launches, I think this will add a few more people.

awesome
this sounds like an awesome idea. Making it from Ashland boat launch, Falgout's, or Jugs would be a great idea. Get this going because i'll fish it a bunch. Is there any way it could be on thursdays though??

I hope to try and get this going next month we will give it a shot. I'll keep y'all informed.
FLiesitdies, I can't do it on a Thursday it's going to have to be a Friday. Or possibly a weekend day but we might start running into a large crowd on the weekend so ultimately I want it to be on Friday I think. Also I don't really want to do it in Dularge. Maybe Falgout but definitely not Jugs. Too many people already. Although if you wanted to fish out of that launch for the tournament that's cool but you would have to be back at Ashland for weigh in. But we can figure all the logistics out later.
Thanks, everyone

Sorry
Yea sorry its been taking me a little while. I've been having some boat problems and didn't want to start until I had all that squared away. Hopefully in a week or two. Thanks for the patiences.

Interested
I'm definitely interested in these tournaments, but if the fish have to be alive that would be a deal breaker. Having to have the extra weight of an ice chest filled with water and all the extra things that system would need would be entirely to much weight and would affect the draft of my boat too much. Like I said earlier, I'm interested but I'd be out if you decide to hold to keeping the fish alive. Just do an ice chest check prior to the boat launching and then you'd ensure its all fair. I also like the idea of randomly switching launch sites to keep it interesting with the different areas.
