Don't know if this is the truth or a rumor,I was told this morning that Wildlife and Fisheries Agent were waiting at boat launches checking for boat trailer inspection tag. Anyone else heard of this? Do you even get a tag for your trailer?

The real story
Hey, guys, here's the real story on this issue: http://www.louisianasportsman.com/details.php?id=5104
hate to say it!!!
yep, true!!! its been a law forever! every trailer, camper, whatever is pulled behind a vechicle in la. needs a stupid, useless inspection tag!!! back in the seventies i use to get them, but they never checked for them, so i stopped. now in the money crunch they started checking them just to give tickets for the money!! something like tinted windows, never cared before, now they need the money!! what a great government we got?? we the people, no not anymore, we the money!!! money, money, money!!

Yep knew it was the law, but I never heard of W&F staking out boat launches to give brake tag tickets.

Great
They checked me last year!

rangerz!
a ldwf agent has more authority than the land police!! they can give tickets on the water and on land! they can stop you on the hwy just to check you out if u have a boat or even ice chest in your truck!!! land police cant!! remember whatever it takes for the state to make money, they will do!!! the more money the state makes, the more money politicians can put in their big old pockets, thats why!!! what a great country we live in???

trailer inspection
Its not a new law. Its been around for a long time. Just a way they can write tickets in spot and do nothing but just wait on u at the boat ramp. They did this at a lake up here and there was 28 boats in the lake. They wrote 27 tickets.

oh well
it is what it is, no point in complaining about it we just need to all get stickers and then they will never check for them again because its not making money for them anymore.

same thing with motorcycles, they need brake tags too but they are supposed to be stuck onto the fork tubes or under the seat if it folds up yet waterproof stickers with glue on the back that can actually be put where the law says you must have them were never made or distributed to tag stations so its ''accepted'' to just have a regular brake tag (unused but filled out) in your hands along with your insurance and registration papers. I know its hard to believe Louisiana would make a law that you cannot follow because Louisiana refused to provide the product needed to comply with that law, hard to believe I know but its true.

you find 100 bike riders and I doubt you'll find 3 of them with break tags for em.

WLF is in the tax collection business right now and all they want to do is to take your money by any means they can use. they will also be doing spot boat inspections on the water and at the launch looking for safety equipt, expired fire extinguishers and if you extinguisher has rusty on it its expired for safety reasons so if you scratch it you better touch up the paint job or you WILL get a ticket.

its like mardi gras out there and the ticket writers are the ones having the party.

blatant money grab
I make it a habit it get a trailer tag during the annual truck brake tag. Like all brake tags, its stupid. I especially like the part where they check to see if the car can go in reverse. Like you can park a car that only only go forward.

Meanwhile, they don't check the important stuff, like brake pads and pollutants from exhaust (which they do in other states). A blatant money grab.

Maybe I shouldn't give them ideas.....

Dr.Spot,
I'm pretty sure they're checking to see of your back up lights are working where you put the car in reverse!

You can get the life time tag

cops can check lights anytime
Functioning lights are important. But that's basically all they are checking on the trailer. However, cops can give you a ticket anytime they want if vehicle or trailer lights don't work, with or without an inspection tag. Again, its just a money grab.

no argument there sir, inspection sticker is complete B.S. I wonder how much the charge is? Last time I got one for my car 10 years ago it was $110.00

Inspection sticker!
Just like in your windshield, 10 bucks cause they don't have to hook it up to the computer. Got a ticket for my lawn trailer. BS

Just because you have a sticker doesn't mean all your lights work. They should be checking if all your stuff works. How stupid this state can be. Not all states have inspection stickers. Just a way to get the sportsman's money.

Inspection Sticker Price
Last i got in EBR parish $160 not $110 no mo

nope
''You can get the life time tag''

the lifetime tag is for the license plate NOT the brake tag.

and trailers cant get the 2 year brake tags either because they are trailers, only cars and trucks can get 2 year tags at $20 ($10 for 1 year x 2 = $20)

by the way, last time I checked no brake tag tickets cost $150

lawsuit?
in the last 20 years i have purchased 3 new boats from la dealers not once have any of those trailors ever had an inspection sticker i paid for tax title and license. that normaly includes every thing to make it street legal. your car must have a inspection sticker before you leave the lot. lets call for a class action against the dealers for years of not doing their job. this
is the first i hear of having to my boat trailor inspected. looked though my paper work on the last one i bought in 07 nothing about the trailer needing tags

facts
Some of you need to get your facts straight. The L.D.W.F. does not have more authority than other law enforcement agencies. Actually the Sheriffs Office is the Chief Enforcement Agency for the Parish. How about everyone stop complaining and get your equipment legal. Maybe it is not a money thing but a safety thing.

...
but it is about money. you really think every law is for your safety, then you trust the gumment too much.

Facts
Have to disagree it is not a safety thing it is 100% a money thing , if it was a safety thing then day in day out 365 days a year i would not see cars , trucks , trailers going down the road passing the police cars with burnt tail lights , no brake lights , and i wouldnt have to replace my shocks every six months because a safe road has so many patchs that 5 mph under the speed limit you cant keep control on. ask any of our local police and they will tell you it is a money thing.

thats a good one , they are not all bad , and im sure they have alot better things to do then write tickets for taillights , but dont enforce one and ignore the other because its worth more money

Trailer Registration
I just received a boat and trailer from my mother (it was my deceased father's). It has Georgia plates that are expired (my father died over 3 years ago). I have a notarized statement from my mother stating she is giving it to me.

My question is, do I have a grace period where I can use this trailer (the boat is taken care of) before I need to get the proper registration from the LA Office of Motor Vehicles?

I'd like to go fishing tomorrow.

Thanks.

Fact not fiction
After reading the comments, did a little checking and found the following, off the DMV website. now have to figure out a way to attach it to my boat trailer.
No person shall drive or move on any highway any motor vehicle, low-speed vehicle as defined in R.S. 32:1(40), trailer, semitrailer, or pole trailer, or any combination thereof, unless the equipment upon any such vehicle is in good working order and adjustment as required in this Chapter and said vehicle is in such safe mechanical condition as not to endanger the driver or other occupant or any person upon the highway. Every motor vehicle, low-speed vehicle, trailer, semitrailer, and pole trailer registered in this state shall bear a valid safety inspection certificate issued in the state of Louisiana, except as otherwise provided by R.S. 32:1305(G).

Acts 1960, No. 405, 1; Acts 1995, No. 475, 1; Acts 1997, No. 77, 1; Acts 1997, No. 288, 1; Acts 2003, No. 986, 1.

Sue the dealers
To the user that mentioned a class action lawsuit of the bait dealers, when you paid your title and license on your boat trailer, I guarntee you the dealer did not charger you the mandatory 10-20 required by the state to add an inspection ticket.... Actually a lot of car dealerships are going away from it so go grab ya an inspection sticker and I bet someone will do it with even looking at the trailer!!

memmory is a funny thing
Lets sue the dealers, please!!!!

when you buy a car you do NOT get a brake tag on it.

it comes with a temporary registration and paper license number that is NOT your real license plate number or your real perminent registration and they CANNOT issue a vehicle a brake tag until it has a permanent REAL license plate number and your real perminent registration attached to it. brand new vehicles are not required to have a brake tag until the permanent REAL license plate number and your real perminent registration has been issued to it.

after you finally get your real license plate in the mail or pick it up from the dealer YOU can THEN go get a brake tag or if you are lucky the dealer will be registered as an inspection station and they can put a brake tag on it and your real license plate on your vehicle while you wait.

so you see you don't get a brake tag at the time when you buy a trailer or car and while a few dealers might go the extra mile and put a brake tag on your trailer, car, or truck, when you come in to pick up the license plate and registration papers, its not a normal regular practice and most certainly NOT REQUIRED OF THEM.

it has always been and will always be the sole responsibility of the vehicle owner (not the dealer) to get it registered and inspected on a regular basis. that has and will never change.

the same goes for trailers and motorcycles

all about the $$$$
the clearest proof of all this being purely a money grab is, have you noticed there is not one single news story or article anywhere about the large numbers of people getting ticketed each weekend?

not one news outlet or sporting website has had a single story or even a mention about it to worn anyone to get ''legal'' before they get ticketed.

even this website with two or three threads talking about it has seen fit to NOT do a story on something having a huge impact on the fishermen in this state.

there are still people today telling me they haven't heard anything about it and point to no stories being found on it as evidence that's it is bull so I have been trying and trying but there is no story about it I can show them. why???

the only reason is they wouldn't give fair warning is if the silence is intentional to help raise revenue otherwise the dmv and wlf would advise the public ''for safety reasons'' to get legal because they are checking.

REVISED STATUTES
Please do not believe me. Please look it up for your self in the Louisiana Revised Statutes . I am a 8 yr Deputy and 20 Yr Retired Trooper.
The agency writing the ticket , be it LSP , Sheriff's Dept or La Dept orf W .L. & F gets no money for writing a ticket . THAT IS NONE_ZERO. The DA's Office gets the lions share . Then the clerk of court, judges, and the sheriff's dept gets a pittance for collecting the fine and recording all info with La Dept of Motor Vehicles .
As I said Please do not believe me-- look it up for your self.

Money Sticker
I just had mine inspected for the first time. I live in EBR Parish and got a two year sticker for $20. The guy at the inpection station said no need to bring in the trailer, just make sure the lights work!
