Tent Camping in Basin (Pigeon/Sorrel)

Reply
I was planning a little weekend camping trip with my cousin and a buddy of ours and wanted to ask some opinions on the board. I want to go pitch a tent on the bank and just camp and fish all weekend. Do you think if we stay away from house boats and camps anyone will give us any trouble? I know technically it is trespassing and we dont want to start or be in any trouble. Any thoughts fellow fisherman?

Run until you find a 'state land' sign and camp there. Won't be trespassing and shouldn't have any problems.

Thanks Tboy. Haven't spent much time back in that area and totally forgot about the state land. Life saver.

I would definitely find state land. My family has a camp in the basin and would go crazy to find someone camping there. Alot of state land on the atchafalaya itself.

If you are wanting to just camp, you can goto Lake Fausse Point. They have these small islands you can rent for 15$ a weekend all to yourself. They give you a map. Ive camped there before. Pretty nice actually.

You can only reach those islands by boat. Most have a picnic table, small dock, and fire pit.

I'm pretty sure that's the last place I would go and ask for forgiveness rather than permission.

Attakapas WMA has a camp ground or two. Check out the La. State Land Office website to find state lands as most signs are long gone.

Bring plenty of mosquito spray!

swamp fox- yeah that was my thoughts too. have hear of people getting trucks pushed in the swamp for running others nets and traps. I was brought up better than to mess with others things. Just wanna escape the hustle and bustle of the 'city' for a weekend and wouldnt mind being not seeing civilization for a few days.

getrichschemer- that's why im glad i was told about the state land. I didnt want to go a mile down from someones camp and that still be their land. i found a map of state land online and picked out a spot. Hopefully i can get a day off to ride and scout it out. its not exactly like when we go camp on an island out in the middle of the Mississippi River

Thanks to everyone who commented. Its been a real help.

You will be fine on state land. Got a good bit along the levee too. You can pitch your tent and have your truck nearby so you don't have to lug all your stuff in the boat. Got a bunch of places like that between bayou sorrel bridge and ramah. Couple of them right near Grand River boat launch and Upper Grand river boat launch.

I'm new to the Henderson area and plan to start fishing the Basin. I'm into overnight and weekend excursions, so how can you tell private from public and state landout there...the Basin is vast. Are there posted signs or marker that let you know? Are there maps avilable that show the boundaries?
Hate to get shot for fishing, hunting or just pitching a tent on someone elses property by mistake. Grateful for any advice.

Near my deer lease there are signs that say 'State of Louisiana'. Little white signs. You should see them along most major bayous in the area.
