Cougar Help Needed

Reply
OK, we all know cougars aren't suppose to be in Mississippi and only a very few have recently been confirmed in Louisiana.

Normally a sighting occurs in the woods with only one or two people catching a glimps of it. But this time it is a little different and I was hoping someone could help me clear this one up one way or the other.

I got a report from late last night of a cougar eating a deer on side of the road near Natchez. So with Central having played in WM surely there were a number of people making the treck back home through natchez and might have seen this animal eating a deer on side of the road.

If you saw such a thing, what did you think it was. Can you confirm it as a cougar or did you see a dog or a coyote eating a deer Saturday night?

I just figured this would be a somewhat unique opportunity to either prove or disprove a sighting. If others saw the same thing then probably true. If others saw a coyote eating beside the road on a road kill then I would know the sighting was a misidentification.

Mike , I don't have any info on the Natchez cat sighting for you but I believe in the big cats cause I seen it with my own eyes as close as you can get , my wife seen it twice , late one night she was sitting next to me and if I wouldn't have let off the gas we would have hit it on Hwy 190 in Lacombe at the pipeline crossing that goes up to Abita , I talked to so many local people about it , there was a dozen stories of people who seen it that week on the Trace , Todd Berry Rd , Hwy 434 , and along that pipeline between Abita and Lacombe , and I was told by a fireman friend that he was told the sheriff's office had 10 calls of sightings of a big black cat that week , I wasn't one of them calls and none of the stories I heard had mention of calling it in , so that's 25 or so sightings in a week and I am sure there were more unheard , some old timers who have lived in Lacombe for 70+ years tell stories of black and tan large cats from the past , I had posted my incident before and never really got much response out of it , I guess it is like telling someone you seen a unicorn , my story is that we seen a very large black cat , right off the bat most will tell you there is no black stage of a cougar , which very well is probably true after a lot of research I say what we seen is a black jaguar , they have been documented in Arizona and in Texas and will travel great lengths every night so they could easily have been here in La. , the last spotted jaguar documented as killed here in La. was in June 1886 , you can see old pics of the cats on the net if you search for them -----------three weeks ago I was working on heavy equipment way back in the woods off Lee Rd north of Covington , very isolated spot , there were deer tracks thick and I was walking on top of them as I worked , the guy I was working with went to get another machine to assist in the job and I finished all I could do till he got back , so I followed the tracks out of the clearing and on to a trail into the woods , I find huge cat tracks along side the deer tracks , I am 55 and spent countless hours in the woods , seen all types of animal tracks and when you see a huge cat track you know it , when he comes back I tell him and show him and he tells me that 2 years ago WLF had trapped a cougar and tranquilized it just 2 miles north of where we were at on someone's property that he knew , I never read that story in the news ------------ I think it is easy to deduct why the WLF would say they don't exist even if they knew that they did , you would have to think that there is a very small population of them and to protect them and not to kill them would be their goal , if they did say they were here there would be women afraid for their children and animals , crying for someone to do something , and it would trigger many trophy hunters out to get it even though it would be illegal to shot it
