Garmin GPSMAP 421 and Atchafalaya Basin

Capt. Paul, I'm looking into buying a Garmin GPSMAP 421 and was wanting to know which map should I buy to use in the lower Atchafalaya Basin. I hunt and fish from the Grand Lake/Bayou Pigeon area south to the Duck Lake/Flat lake area.

I am sorry about the delay; I am recovering from surgery and could not get to my desk top to respond to your inquiry.

Although the Garmin GPSMAP 421 is a Marine unit, I recommend that you first look at the Garmin TOPO US 24K Southeast DVD, Part Number: 010-11319-50 at a list cost of $129.99 USD. Get the program in a DVD program.

This program is based on USGS Topographical maps. These type of maps are designed to show land features, but I believe that unless if you are going offshore, then these types of maps better depict the Louisiana marshlands.

Go to a stocking Garmin dealer and ask to see the images of the 24K topo on a device. Then zoom in on the image to a particular location that you are familiar with. Doing this will give you a chance to evaluate the mapping program for your self.

If you prefer other type of mapping, look at the g2 and g2Vision as you would for the 24K mapping.
