Captain Paulís Response ~
For inshore navigation in the Louisiana marshes, I prefer a map based on USGS Topographic maps. Lowrance offers their INSIGHT series of mapping which would fill the bill for most of what you want.
Their Nautic Insight HD 2013 East,
FOR HDS, HDS GEN2, HDS GEN2 TOUCH, ELITE-7 AT $149.00 FOR COASTAL AND OFFSHORE USE.
And their Topo Insight PRO 2013 East
FOR HDS, HDS GEN2, HDS GEN2 TOUCH, ELITE, MARK #000-11066-001 FOR LAND USE AWAY FROM THE COASTAL SHORELINE.
NAVIONICS Offers their #907 P+ (PLATINUM)of the northern part of the GULF OF MEXICO at $399.00.
It will cover the offshore areas as well as going about 25 to 50 miles inshore. These charts are based on NOAA marine Charts. The detail is not going to be as sharp and the coverage not as broad as the Insight type of maps.
Go to a stocking dealer that handles Lowrance AND Navionics and actually view the detail and coverage of the aforementioned mapping programs. Select a location that you are familiar with and zoom in to a particular location. Compare one to another and make up your own mind.
Whatever mapping program, be sure to get the Lowrance INSIGHT PLANNER. This program allows you to transfer data such as Routes, tracks and WAYPOINTS between your GPS unit and a PC computer. It is an invaluable tool for archiving your data and in planning a trip.
Get back in touch and let me know what program you decided on.
