Hogs and Dogs

I'VE HUNTED PEARL RIVER SINCE THE 70'S. OPENING WEEKENDS YOU COULD NOT WALK DOWN A TRAIL 200 YARDS AND NOT SEE A GUT PILE FROM HOGS THAT WERE BEING TAKEN BY HUNTERS. I DON'T HAVE ACCTUAL NUMBERS BUT IT WAS VERY IMPRESSIVE.I WOULD SEE HERDS OF 15 HOGS OR MORE ON SOME OF THE HUNTS. YOU COULD EASILY GET ENOUGH HOGS FOR YOURSELF AND GIVE SOME TO FRIENDS AND NEIBHORS. NEVER HEARD ANY FUSS BEING MADE FROM HUNTERS, LDWF OR ANYONE ELSE FOR THAT MATTER. DEER HARVESTS WERE OVER 30 ON A SEASON. OPENING DEER SEASON THERE WAS LINES OF VEHICLES WAITING TO CHECK IN. GAME WARDENS WERE PRESENT TO CHECK IN. A LOT OF MONEY WAS BEING SPENT ON LICENSE SUPPLIES ETC. LDWF HAD THE MONEY TO KEEP THE TRAILS CUT, PLANT SEVERAL FOOD PLOTS EVEN PICKING TRASH LEFT BEHIND BY SOME INCONSIDERED SO CALLED SPORTSMEN.THEN IT WAS DESIDED TO ALLOW DOGS FOR HOGS.JUST A COUPLE SEASONS LATER HOG NUMBERS HAD DRASTICALLY DECLINED. NUMBERS OF HUNTERS WENT DOWN.HUNTERS WERE GOING TO PRWMA BECAUSE THEY HAD A GOOD CHANCE OF GETTING A HOG, IF NOTHING ELSE.FOR OVER 20YEARS I AVERAGED 7 HOGS A YEAR UNTILL THE START OF DOG HUNTS. AFTER THE DOGS THE MOST I HAD WAS 3 HOGS.LAST 3 YEARS ONE EACH. I HUNT THE SAME AREAS AS BEFORE, THEIR NUMBERS ARE NOT THERE. REVENUE FOR THE LDWF DECLINED, AND I THINK IS DUE TO THE LACK OF GAME. FIRST THE MAJORITY OF FOOD PLOTS WENT AWAY.THEN THE CHECK IN WARDENS WENT AWAY. YOU CAN SEE THE TRAILS NOW. WHEN KATRINA CAME, IT DESTROYED THE PLACE. I AM SURE A LOT OF DEER AND
HOGS GOT DISPLACED OR KILLED.HOG NUMBERS WILL INCREASE QUICKER THAN DEER BECAUSE OF PROLIFERATION. I SPOKE WITH ONE OF THE WARDENS NEAR THE END OF DEER SEASON, HE TOLD ME THAT HOG HARVEST WAS DOWN AND ONLY SEVEN DEER WERE TAKEN. I DONT KNOW WHAT THE FINAL NUMBERS WERE. TAKE THE HOGS OUT OF THERE, AND THERE WILL BE NOTHING TO HUNT EXEPT SQUIRELS. I,VE ALSO HUNTED BOGUE CHITTO REFUGE ADJACENT TO PRWMA, SAME THING HAPPENED THERE WHEN DOG HUNTERS CAME. {THOUGH DEER NUMBERS ARE HIGHER THAN PRWMA BECAUSE OF SHORTER DEER SEASONS}. TALK TO SOME, BOTH IN PRWMA AND BOGUE CHITTO, IT IS NOT UNCOMMON TO HAVE 5 OR MORE HOGS IN A DAYS HUNT. BOTTOM LINE: STOP DOG HUNTS WITH DOGS. LET HUNTERS LOOK FORWARD IN TO GETTING SOMETHING BESIDES A SQUIREL OR TWO.

You blame dog hunters. Guess the wildlife agents flying in helicopters, killing hogs and just letting them lay there and rot has nothing to do with numbers being down

Blame the dog hunters?
If u check the records of all the wmas the state has managed over the years u will see a pattern. It has nothing to do with the dog hunters. Even the federal refuges are the same and they dont allow dog hunters. Ive hunted tensas refuge since the early 80s because it was the #1 spot to kill deer back then. Their numbers went from +1200 deer per season back then to around 300 now-a-days. Pearl River has never had a big population of animals killed and I'm not sure why. Before Katrina it had a very heavy canopy and almost no ground cover or thickets. Katrina changed all that. According to the experts gameshould of flourished since then but hasn't. I don't know the answer but I know it has nothing to do with the dog hunters because I am one and I have to deal with this with u.

FEDERAL LANDS
BLUE DIAMOND DENT, YOU SAY HOG HUNTING ON FEDERAL REFUGEE\'S IS NOT ALLOWED WITH DOGS. THAT IS NOT CORRECT. BOGUE CHITTO WILDLIFE REFUGE, STARTED HOG HUNTING WITH DOGS SAME TIME AS PRWMA. I BELIEVE IT WAS IN 1997, AND IT IS STILL GOING ON. DATES ARE PRINTED ON THEIR PERMITS.
CHECK THEIR WEBSITE. I\'VE HUNTED THERE SINCE THE EARLY 80\'S. SAME THING HAPPENED THERE WITH THE HOGS. DEER NUMBERS ARE HIGHER THERE THAN PEARL RIVER DUE TO SHORTER SEASONS AND LESS HUNTERS.
THERE WAS A LOT OF THICKETS IN PRWMA IN THE 70\'S AND 80\'S AND A LOT MORE GAME. WHEN DOGS FIRST STARTED AND FOR A FEW YEARS AFTER THAT, YOU HAD DOGHUNTERS FROM AS FAR AS FLORIDA AND TEXAS COMING TO PRWMA TO HUNT HOGS. THEY CAUGHT A LOT MORE HOGS IN ONE MONTH THAN STILL HUNTERS WOULD GET IN TWO OR THREE SEASONS. IF THE DEPT DOES NOT GET THEIR ACT TOGETHER THERE WOULD BE NOTHING TO HUNT EXEPT SQUIRELS.

I stand corrected
I am wrong about Bogue Chitta Refuge. I forgot that I used to hunt it very heavy for many years before Katrina. Katrina changed everything. The areas we hunted became unpenetratable and we quit and havent been back. I hunted prwma a bit but we hunted the lower marsh section where no one else but the dog hunters hunted. I gave it up a few years ago because the numbers were way down and have hunted up in concordia parish in the hardwoods. Many people here are blaming dog hunters but dog hunters mostly practice catch and release. On rare occasions a hog may be killed if it is hurt bad or damaged but mostly we release or relocate. On wmas we are required to kill unless we have a special permit by wlf which allows us to transport live which I do. We cant kill them all. I ,myself have caught hundreds of hogs a year and cant eat that much.

Question for bluediamondent
Bluediamondent - out of those hundreds of pigs you all caught live, did you ever once catch one live, and let it go or give it to someone who would let em go somewhere else besides where you caught it?

Answer
I most certainly did even though it was against the law to do so. A lot of people have called me to come catch hogs off their property and some others wanted them. So it was from one to the other and occasionally we would just plant some where there was none and in afew years they flourished.

thats the problem
Pigs have been here for a long time in places but it wasn't until people started catching pigs for sport til they became a real problem. Instead of killing the hogs or just carrying them back to their place and feeding them out and killing them later, people started catching them and moving them around to new places so they could catch them elsewhere. Pigs get to a new place and multiply like crazy because the new habitat they are on they have plenty of resources (at the expense of deer, turkeys, etc)

I have relatives that still to this day catch them and put them on their buddies' hunting club so they can catch them their also. They are not out there to catch a pig and kill it to eat it, just there for the catch.

solution?
so we found the root of the problem, now whats the solution?

We do agree that there is a problem right? We have to agree on that first haha

The solution
Hog hunting has been going on in Louisiana long before any of us were around. Ive hunted with some of the top people in the Louisiana Legislature back in the 70s and 80s but never a governor. There never ever was a problem with the hogs in the woods until the Louisiana Wildlife and Fisheries Commission started over-regulating the resourse. The answer to the problem is for them to remove ALL regulations they have placed upon the hunters and the problem will fix itself.

catching pigs for sport is the problem
Not talking about hog hunting, yes its been going on forever and there wasn't a problem then because pigs were shot and killed. The problem came when the hog 'hunters' were simply catching pigs and relocating them to other areas. Now the sport is to just catch the pig, not to shoot it

The real solution is to make it illegal to transport live wild hogs period, that is the start of the solution. Until you get into peoples' pocketbooks, they will keep on doing it.

transporting wild hogs
It is now and has always been illegal to transport live wild hogs. O.K. theres the law. Look it up. So we should not be having this problem. Anything else? The problem still exists.

transporting is still the problem
the problem is still the transport of live wild pigs. You yourself admitted to doing it many times. That is just one person, imagine how many other folks are doing it. Thats the problem. Until we get into folks pocketbooks, they will continue to relocate these things

transporting wild hogs
The french and spanish explorers were the first to transport the hogs. The problem is a lot more recent. Like the last ten years since the wlf started tying the sportsmans hands behind their back and telling them to go hunt. The Louisiana Sportsman should not accept any thing but total deregulation. What they have done is slap every louisiana hunter in the face when they told us we havent done our job and killed enough hogs that they were going to brake all kinds of laws and kill our game and let them rot.

transporting live hogs
You have to have a special permit given by lwf to transport live wild hogs. Alot of hunters dont deal with all the paper work required.

so you haven't seen a single hog hunter transport a live pig in the Pearl? It is happening, ask bluediamondement if its happening or has happened. Just because you don't see it doesn't mean its not happening.

I have never witnessed a murder, but they happen everyday. See where this is going.

deSoto brought them over yes you are correct. Feral pigs do not have that large of a home range, they don't wander very far in the grand scheme of things. When they get moved into new areas, the population explodes.

Ask ANY landowner with pigs if they are detrimental, and then ask if they want pigs on their landscape. You may find one or two, but the majority of landowners with pigs on their property wish they were gone.

How to straighten it out
The answer is in the Louisiana Legislature. The arrogant sob's at wlf need to have a reality check. The legislature used to handle this stuff and they are the ones we will need to oversee this and correct this injustice.

in response to isucrazy
isucrazy, I am acknowledging the problem, its the relocating of pigs that caused this and is still causing this. Yes, I recognize my relatives as part of the problem too. They do it to this day! I try and educate them as well, but you can tell them until you are blue in the face (just like on this website)the bad things that pigs do and they will continue to do it UNTIL either their personal property, land, etc is damaged by pigs or until someone gets in their pocketbook.

LIVE HOGS
I WAS IN PRWMA THE FIRST WEEKEND OF FEBRUARY.
MET A GUY AND HIS SON HOG HUNTING WITH DOGS ON INDIAN BAYOU ROAD. CHUCK AND KEITH TWO OF THE GAME WARDENS WERE THERE AS WELL. THAT GUY SAID, HE HAD A PERMIT FROM LDWF TO TRANSPORT LIVE HOGS CAUGHT IN THE WMA'S. HE HAD CAUGHT SOME LAST YEAR AND TAKEN TO HIS PLACE..... TO FATTEN THEM UP.. YEAH RIGHT..HA..HA.. FATTEN THEM UP...

Live wild hogs
There is more to the story than just take them home. The hogs have to be permanently ear tagged with official numbered tags from lwf and reports have to filled out where the hogs are going to be kept and a lot of other bull. Everything about the hogs is documented from beginning to end.
