HELICOPTERS AND DOGS

Reply

LWDF HELICOPTER HOG HUNT WAS A FIRST. SO, THAT DID NOT HAVE A GREAT IMPACT ON HOG NUMBERS. OFCOURCE I DONT AGREE WITH WHAT LDWF DID.
AS FOR THE FEDERAL WILDLIFE REFUGE'S NOT ALLOWING DOGS, IT IS NOT CORRECT. BOGUE CHITTO STARTED ALLOWING DOGS IN 1997. AND IT IS STILL GOING ON. CHECK THEIR PERMIT PAMPHLET.

Clarification....
It wasn't the LDWF that is doing the hog hunting from the helicopter, it's the Agriculture Department that is doing it... They own the helicopter and is only paying flight time... If you look at the cost vs. hogs that are taken in a day, it really is a great way to keep the numbers down and is not really costing much... The helicopter will still be flying in areas where hogs are plentiful and are tearing up land... The difference is that LDWF asked them to come to the game reserves and they did... It's not costing the State or LDWF, it's the Agriculture Dept.... they would be flying somewhere else if they weren't flying for us!

Can't Argue....
I can't argue anything you said.... I do trap and hunt hogs on private land next to a WMA, I quit hunting with my .223 cause it ain't quite enough to put the big ones down.... I now carry a 20 gauge with slugs.... I can tell you that they are looking at different regulations and they know the problems, it's just dealing with the bureaucracy... I've taking right at or over 50 with others in my club since September... It's a huge problem!!

Still Costing
The 800.00 dollar an hour cost comes from all of our pockets. There are a lot more 'cost' effective ways of slowing the piggy's down!

Re: HELICOPTERS AND DOGS
More efficient that $800/hour? I guess it depends on the perspective. Lets say LDWF/Dept of Ag flies 6 hours and kills 300 pigs. The cost would be $4,800 which would be $16/pig. Now, here is where the perspective comes in.... How long would it take you to kill 300 pigs? How much corn would you need to buy if you were trapping? How much would it cost to feed your dogs? How much fuel would it cost you? If it took more than 6 months, now you are looking at another season of liters being dropped, so you just lost whatever headway you just made.
