Generator opinions..?

Reply

Hey guys, I am looking for the any opinions on the best generator for a Camp... I am open to either Diesel or Propane.... Keep in mind It must be transported by boat.. Propane would be lighter, but getting bottles of propane back and forth would be a pain... but would it be worth it..? Any opinions would be greatly appreciated...

Diesel
IMO, would go with diesel, as the propane seems to go fast(empty cylinders fast), at least the ones I have been around.

MY THOUGHTS ALSO.
THANKS!! That's exactly what I was wondering.. I could fill a bulk diesel with no problem.. Problem is finding a sizeable diesel that's light enough, and cheap enough.. haha

a lot less maintenance and problems with propane because it burns clean. propane lasts forever sitting in a tank, diesel don't! only my opinion!

generator
I know of a camp that switched from diesel generators to propane. This camp is a commercial hunting operation and the owner was told that 1000 gallons of propane would last 4-6 weeks on the setup they have, running a 50KW generator. They have been running through 1000 gallons of propane about every 10 days. That same generator on a diesel engine was burning less than 1000 gallons in a month.

My Tri-Fuel...
I have a small 5500 watt with a tri fuel kit... I can burn propane, natural gas or gasoline.. propane and natural gas doesn't burn as hot, and you do burn a little more, but pretty much my generator will run for about 12 hours on 5 gallons of gas and a few minutes less (about 15 to 30 minutes) on propane... You can pretty much say that they are all equal.. 100 gallons gas, 100 gallons propane and 100 cubic foot natural gas are pretty much the same.. Cost wise, natural gas is best, gasoline second and propane most expensive... Now if you are buying bulk diesel... that's your best bet.. A diesel generator runs at about 1800 rpm so it has less wear on the equipment and is much cheaper to run.
