Big Cats!

Reply
I just moved to the area from Maryland. I live in jarreau, on the false river. After a dozen nights of juggin this crowded lake, I have concluded other than brehm, its a waste of space. Where can a man go to get on Big cats? My biggest excitement of moving here was the duck hunting, and monster cats ive read about my entire life. I don't need detailed spots, just bodys of water. thanks a lot.

If you want to catch big cats, I suggest you go to East Grand Lake. Fish the south end of the lake using cut shad. Depending on the water level of the spillway, It can be as shallow as 6 ft deep. Set your bait about 3 or 4 ft deep on juglines. I set out about 80 jugs. Even on slow days, I'll bring home a mess of fileted catfish.

I do good in Bayou Maringouin. Thats the bayou on the outside of the basin levee at the Ramah exit. I don't leave them unattended either. I put out about 2 to 3 dozen, and usually get fish as soon as they are out.

you talkin bout the little river that goes parallel to the levi? I never leave my jugs, if its slow enough to leave em sit for anytime, it aint worth stayin for. Normally back home in maryland by the time I put them all, out ive got two or three hooked.

Yes. It's the body of water that follows the levee on the outside of the basin. The area I fish is south of the interstate. With a kayak you can launch anywhere. With a boat you can launch at Grand River boat launch. If you google earth Grand River LA it will be that boat launch. From that boat launch it it the area north of the launch. My deer camp sits on that levee north of that launch. I fish it a lot. Always do good. Not much current. The wind and or the water lilies are the only thing that gets in the way. Got a few borrow pits on that bayou that are good to fish in too.

Heck, if you wanna fight big cats, head straight for the Miss. River. Worked 40 years on the river here, and used to watch deckhands on tugboats pull in loads of 60 to 100 lb. cats all day long. There are cats in that river way over 100 lbs.

I went in Bayou Marigouin right in front of my camp this afternoon between 3 and 4 oclock and caught 15 fish from 5 to 10 lbs on chicken livers using 16 jugs(noodles). Only 1 hour of fishing. Not 'big cats', but they're gonna taste great tomorrow. Was gonna go walk in the woods to shoot some squirrels, but man those woods are so thick right now it's hard to get in and see anything.

Few years back you could go to the old river control structure above Lettsworth and snag for big cats, my nephew snagged a 60 pounder one time I don't know if you can still go there, Ifyou do get to go they do it from the bank on the downflow side

Yessir. I've been in bad spots before on the water during duck season back home in Maryland, where I honestly thought we were going to have to call for help. I promised myself I wouldn't intentionally put myself in that position again. My boat ain't really weight/ power ready for that current. Fish ain't worth dieing.

I was loockin at map and looks like fastest way to bayou sara, where I wanna try is if I put in old ferry road and shoot acroos river to st francisville side. I don't ever see any bouts out there, is it safe or better off driving 30 minutes and finding a boat launch on other side.

The old ferry on st fran side is now a launch. Cross the new bridge and turn left on 61. Next left on 3057 and keep goin t u hit the river.

went scout in and found both ferry road ramps and saw bayou Sara. Try and hit it this weekend.

The land next to the launch ramp in Baton Rouge has been bought for come kind of development. Not sure if that landing is going to be available in the future. If anyone has any information on this please post!!!

Also has anyone tried the grain elevator in Port Allen since they rebuilt the loading facilities? Grain, catfish and rats still present?

as for the land next to ferry ramp, it was gated off and signs on it.

If I am not mistaken they own the ramp as well. If so glad to see that they are allowing it to still be used as a boat ramp. Hope it stays this way.

Some good places to start your search for big cats might be larger rivers or reservoirs in the area, which may have the types of conditions that catfish prefer. Alternatively, you could consider hiring a local guide to take you to some of the best spots for catfishing in the area. Whatever you do, be sure to follow all local fishing regulations and obtain any necessary permits or licenses before you head out on the water. Good luck and happy fishing!
