What hook do you use for bream?

Reply
For the past 30 years I've been using either a #6 or a #8 long-shank cricket hook. It always seemed that I miss a lot of bites. Just recently I read an article where a bream-fishing expert stated that he used the shortest-shanked hook he could find. He also uses 6-8 or even a #10 sized hook. Went to Academy and bought some. I'll have to bring my reading glasses next time. Trying to put-on a wiggling worm on those little hooks gave me skull-cramps. It also didn't help to have fingers as big as fence-posts! I'm guessing crickets, mealworms or wax worms would be a lot easier to bait-up with. What hooks do y'all use?

One of my favorite flies for fly fishing, a jitter bee, uses the Eagle Claw Baitholder #080 in size 8 or 10. The Eagle Claw 181 baitholder hook found at K-Mart can be used as a substitute.

I know you're not fly fishing but check these hooks out when/if you get the chance.

One of the things I love about using this fly/hook is that the fish seems to get hooked in the corner of the mouth almost every time making hook removal very easy.

I always use a # 10 long shank. The long shanks are easier to remove. I usually fish with crickets and grass shrimp. Worms could be a problem. If i fished with worms i would use a #8 long shank you can slide more worm up the hook with a long shank.

I like the 10 long shank also. Short shank tends to get swallowed, therefore killing small fish.

Use the 6, 8 or 10 size long shank hook...but for better hook sets, bend the shank at a slight angle just about in line with the hook point/barb. This will give the hook a 'turning' affect when the fish swims off with your bait and you pull up the slack...much better hook sets and you still have the long shank hook for leverage to remove from the fish.

Good Luck

I usually catch grass shrimp near the launch. It Takes about 5-10 mins, but they're free, always there, and worth their weigh in gold when fish are hitting on them

If they're not near the launch like in the video, I find a hydrila bed and rake them out of the grass bed. Good luck and good fishing
