That is a channel mullet. One of the better eating fish swimming. They do not get big but are EXCELLENT table fare.

I caught one of those for ride the bull, looked a little like a rat red. Was told by everyone that they were really good eating.

I took a guided trout trip years ago with Gus Cheramie and we caught a few with him. He got excited everytime we caught one. He kept some of them but cleaned some for us and kept them seperate from the trout. We fried them seperately too, the channel mullet were hands down better than the trout.

...another name for that channel mullet is a ground mullet , I'd say the later name being used more in Mississippi and Alabama ----- very good eating

The true common name is actually Southern Kingfish-Menticirrhus americanus

I was born in Mississippi and that my friend is what we call good eating or like some have said 'ground mullet'. As a kid we would have them at least once a month on Friday nights. Excellent table fare.

Next time you catch some try a few!

The man is right Gulf kingfish are called whiting. Most people just call them Gulf Whitey, but I use them for cut bait too. I normally catch more this time of year if I am fishing deep holes. in marsh.

That is some of the best shallow-fried fillets you can have as breakfast after an early morning wade-fishing excursion in the surf. Has to be freshly caught ... I call it whiting. Some called it channel mullet and other Regal names.
