Masters Fishermen club tourney day 9-13-2014

Had our small club tournament last Saturday (9-13-2014) out of Manchac (North pass launch). My plan was to cross Lake M. and fish the Reserve canal and that other canal beside it with the idea that the winds coming from the North - Northeast would be pushing bait from the lake right up into those canals. I didn't realize just how strong and steady the wind was going to push, so crossing the length of Lake M. became quite the adventure! The lake was kicking with huge rollers and a chop on top of those! I knew it would be rough with the N-NE winds but man, I wasn't expecting that bad. Anyway, we get to the first canal off the south part of the lake and I start throwing my silver top-water popper and pulled in a little 10 incher on the first cast. Kept on fishing the silver popper and was getting consistent bites from small fish along a very specific 30 - 40 yard stretch. We were finally able to find 2 keepers amongst all the small fish on back to back casts. They were both small keepers. All our bites on the poppers were very unusual... They weren't exploding on the lure like you typically see with top-waters but kind of sneaking up under the bait barely grabbing it and dragging it down. I could barely see the bite! After the action there slowed a bit we decided to scratch our plan to hit the reserve canal and head back to some spots on the interstate canal (via the Ruddock canal) just to be done with the lake, which seemed to be getting even worse. I was trying to find some moving water that was coming out the woods but I couldn't find any moving water. We were only able to manage a few more small fish with a spinner bait the rest of the day.
