Public/private land Hunting

Reply
After Hunting this Teal season it has become painfully evident just as last year. When individuals are invited by land owners to hunt on their property/ or Leased property. My hunt was disturbed during prime hunting time by individuals running wild and crazy with their mudboats some even passed about 20 feet off of our decoys. The land I hunt on is Private property and accessible by everyone thru cuts and canals but it is not School Board/ Parish owned property. The individuals who owned the property were with us and at one point we were asked if we had permission to hunt it. At that point he showed him his tax and land papers and away he went. Point is not all people have permission to hunt private lands and should acquire such permission. There is a posted sign in each entrance to the property but it is totally disregarded.. The owner does not have a problem with numerous hunters on property but before the season opened there were plenty teal but got scared by numerous mudboats spooking them. I am sure that sooner rather than later if mudboats continue to run back and forth legal action may be taken for trespassing.. Louisiana law requires you to know where you are and whose property you are on .. Ignorance is not a good excuse. Not trying to be mean just letting wise info out

Good luck with that or even getting somebody to help do anything about it.

I will write it slowly ..If you don't have permission to hunt on Private Property have enough respect to not disrespect the owner..otherwise if you don't you may be paying a trespass ticket..Landowners are getting tired of people abusing their rights as land owners. No difference if you paid a lease agreement. They pay property taxes and or lease payments and have all the right to keep you off of it. I for one respect their property and stay off of private lands unless invited. Many people traverse private lands to get to parish owned properties but many do not even take the time to checkout where they hunt and consider a lot of private property public lands, that is not a accurate assumption..Get a map or find someone familiar with the lay of the land. Louisiana trespass laws state that you should always know where you hunt.. If land is Posted Have the decency to respect it, they do not by Louisiana laws have to post it. Ignorance is no excuse.. Try telling that to the Judge while paying your ticket..

Until surface drives are outlawed and duck dynasty gets cancelled you can forget about duck hunting on public land. Every duck is ran clear to mexico by bearded maniacs in surface drives by opening day.i just hope a deer dynasty never comes on, then i wont have anything left to hunt.

What map do y'all use in Venice to determine what's private? The Dept. of State SONRIS map shows an abundance of state water but it seems a lot of it is posted. I contacted the department to request clarification and essentially they stuck to the SONRIS map as accurate, for the states claim and anything different would have be settled in court. I don't want to piss off any legitimate land owners, but I also don't want to miss any opportunities for some good hunting on state water.....any guidance would be helpful!

Years ago when the limits werent so big, i think it was 3 ducks. I would hunt public land in venice and only see crabbers and the game warden never see another hunter or hear a shot. I would only hunt the tidal movement no matter what time of day it was and be limited out in just minutes. Then when they raised the limits it was like a fleet of boats and then once duck dynasty came on and surface drives make it easy, its over with. More people than ducks. I am now a deer hunter although i do shoot a wood duck or two.

Crazy B, do not be offended by motormouth, I mean motor boat. He loves trying to act educated, but forgets what intelligence really is. He likes to try to be a big boy but remains in a little man's world. In fact, he often attempts to correct poster's comments but he himself uses misspelled words and faulty grammar.

Nonetheless, I have said for years that surface drives have hurt duck hunting in our state because birds have no rest areas.

My family owns waterfowl property and we are not allowed to joy ride on certain portions of the property which have been assigned as rest areas. In addition, after the hunt you must leave the marsh and not return until morning.

Honestly, we have always killed ducks.

As a land owner of 3200 acres on Baptiste Collette, as well as an heir of 10,000 + arces of adjoining property it is very troublesome for me and my family members to be told by a trespasser that we are hunting on private property. Our property is clearly posted. It always has been. I really have no problem with people hunting on my property if they would just be respectful. Find a place to blind up early. Don't wait until 15 minutes before shooting time to run around looking for a place to hunt. Definitely do not run around on my pond shooting at coots while I am still in my blind trying to make a hunt. It is nuckle heads that do those kinds of things that piss me off. He I understand that hunting land is hard to come by and public lands can get over crowded. A few extra hunters on my property keeping the birds moving is a plus. Plaquemines Parish has land availible just beyond our property with good hunting. The Delta Wildlife Refuge is just to the East of Baptiste Collette with Tens of Thousands of acres of great duck hunting. Their is plenty of land and birds for everyone. Be cool, respect others, don't be a dick while hunting on my property and we can all get along. If you act an ass, I will come get your boat numbers and turn your numbers into the PPSO and you won't be welcomed back.... Now Go Hunting....

Quackstacker35 if you cross the river in Venice and travel east on Baptiste Collette, take the first canal on the right. It is Emaline Pass. Travel down that canal and you will come up on an oil platform call Grand Bay Receiving Station. From that point continueing East on both sides of the pass you are on Parish Property and on the left side of the canal is school board property. Awesome teal hunting. Don't let anyone tell you it's private property. Their will be a lot of hunter's from New Orleans area that may try to run you out but don't fall for it. Also if you head down river from Venice and take a left on Main Pass you will enter the Delta Wildlife Refuge. Awesome hunting there. Any where around Romere Pass is great. No Surface drives on the refuge. You will need a pigroue'...... Hope this helps.....

I also use the sonris mapping to overlay some old maps.. Find a area you would like to hunt and gather the township and section numbers and contact the assessors office and inquire if the land is privately owned .I have tried for years to acquire maps from the parish with no luck.. They will not give out any maps I guess due to litigation or ownership changes they will be possibly liable for incorrect info given out. I have run across land that was posted but not private property, posted by someone hoping you will pass it by and hunt some where else..If you get confronted just ask for paperwork and mapping showing ownership or heirship .most assuredly the owner/heir/leasee will have legitimate paperwork in hand. as landowner69 said most people don't have problems with hunters hunting just not running around disturbing hunters trying to enjoy the sport..I hunt out of a mudboat but only use it to blind up and leave. and use waders and or dog to retrieve. This can be a enjoyable sport if consideration for everyone is of the utmost importance..

southernbreed, you are sending him to parish and school board property. Most school board property I know of is leased out for hunting. May want to clarify that

I just like southernbreed have lived in the parish for years and grew up there. There is NO and I mean NO parish Properties Leased or School Board Properties Leased and I can Guarantee that. If you don't believe me travel to the Assessors office and ask or contact them..This is a falsity driven by people not wanting you to hunt in those areas. The Parish has not ever leased any property and will not sub lease either only mineral rights are leased with the condition that the surface right for hunting are not included nor can be subleased for hunting. You have fallen prey to someone. If you can prove me wrong I will gladly succumb to my misinterpretation of this. Parish properties on the east side of the river are listed as Grand Prairie Levee District. Understand this, I have been told that some of the parish properties have been sold and such lands most assuredly may have been leased. That is why the land dept will not issue a map of current land owners/ parish properties . There is considerable discussion about parish ownership versus former people ownership..

I was not arguing just trying to clarify. This would be one of the first parishes I know that allows the public to hunt for free on the property.

Some school board properties are big moneymakers for the parish. Vermilion Parish schoolboard property is prime duck hunting land that is leased

There's no way to have that area be as good as it both could be and used to be before a lot of that land become public. There are a lot of people that duck hunt and they now all have boats that can get them anywhere, not many places to rest on the public land anymore. Doesn't help that there are often people during the week shooting well after shooting hours too, but that's what you get with public land and limited opportunities.

But hey, it is what it is. There are great hunts to be had, just gotta be where they wanna be and be there before someone else gets there.

For years people would lease 1 arpert of land and post off thousands of acres of public land around it.It is still going on boathouse canal, off grand pass, and up river by a local guide service.also up river side of Baptiste Collette, mostly across from the mouth of Kimble pass and Tiger Pass going out on both sides closer to the gulf.

up from the split of Kimbel pass and baptiste for the first 1500 feet or so I believe is privately owned property north and south back towards the river . Once you get to Alexis Bay tho everything towards the east or gulf that is presumably parish property but that land has washed away big time since the storms. And Yes you are correct their is a group that posts property that is not legitimately leased and they continue to but money talks. Have heard several people complaining but to no avail

Thanks all for the comments. I didn't realize it was such a despute down there. I had heard/read about the areas off of Kimbrel being state claimed water, but the posting of state water really seems to be more of an issue off Grand and Tiger. Per SONRIS map most of the water down that way is state claimed with the exception of a few Rosoe patches off the channels, but yet when you go ride out there, it's all posted. I'm not sure how to explain that, and the Dept of State Land really couldn't either. The only thing they mentioned was that there are areas that are currently in ownership disupute with landowners but they are clearly marked on the map. I couldn't find any areas marked as such in Venice.

Guys from the river East down Baptiste Collette to the front parts of Kimbrel Pass and Emaline Pass is private property. Also from the opening of Emaline Pass along the river heading Southeast to just before Main pass is all private property owned by the same family. The property boundaries are visible using the township overlays on the Sonris maps. Parish Property can be found middle ways down Kimbrel Pass and Emailine Pass even with the Oil & Gas Platform on Emaline Pass. At that point the property to the North, East and Southeast is Parish Property. Another piece of Parish Land that has good hunting is down Grand Pass. When you get to the tip of the Island towards the end of the pass on the left is school board property. Plaquemines Parish does not lease land or school board property so don't let anyone fool you with that nonsense.

Not to sure if the Sonris Mapping shows ownership on the township and section points of their maps. You will have to figure out what areas you would like to hunt and take down township/ section points and contact the assessors office to see if the property is actually parish/state owned. if the property taxes are being paid by a individual/corporation etc. then it is your responsibility to either contact them and see if hunting is available or respect them as owners /heirs as some have it posted for hunting privileges being paid by thru leases or thru permissions given..I know its a headache but for the satisfaction of hunting without being run out or possible ticket its worth the time to check it out. like I said in previous posts get the facts straight, have legitimate paperwork handy and then you can argue with the person/persons confronting you that way avoiding a miserable hunt

Guys I'm not talking about parish water I'm talking about STATE water. The water off Tiger and Grand is claimed the same way as the mighty Mississppi River herself.

Its not only bearded maniacs or Duck Dynasty causing issues!! The problems are ignorant hunters with no ethics, new age hunters with no respect/understanding of our sport!! Even some older hunters are getting on the band wagon of how they scout out areas. There is too many duck hunters as a whole, there is no standards of how to scout like they plan to hunt that same area. Lets go check out this area like the ducks will sit still when they see hunters coming?!?! Ride the surface drive around, full speed, like an idot with no sense. It's the whole duck hunting community that is an issue!! Birds are learning from everything we do!! They come down our flyway with pressure beyond belief, they don't all get shot but they all get educated! Next season they may not come so far down or they go down another flyway. Mass of the waterfowl are starting to come down to the west of us!! May seem crazy but think of this- Older birds come down the flyway , get shot at and are pressured everywhere they go. Next season they choose to take a different flight path and learn theres less pressure so they make that the new annual way. Come south to find out they don't have to go all the way when theres more food north of us. You can say whatever but these animals aren't stupid! I've seen them standing on ice and wading in snow like it doesn't bother them one bit!! They have available food and open water to roost, less pressure and they stay!!! They also start to hunker down during the day , migrate and eat at night! We as hunters are changing everything they do. It isn't one group or another doing it all alone.. WE ALL PLAY A ROLE IN IT!! i do agree idiots scare up birds by riding around everywhere or educate them with sky busting/whatever other stunt they pull. The sport is too big with too many people involved. THATS THE PROBLEM!! Stop crying and learn how to change with the birds the way they have changed to survive bc of us. Hell go ahead and quit for me so the sport can go on without cry baby hunters as yourself. Unless they implement some off the wall laws we will not recover to the previous level of birds like the 70's and 80's!! It is not coming back ever again!!!!!! I try harder every year too and i figure it out or i stop going and save my money. I have thousands and thousands in gear also. When i do win over on the ducks its that much better!! Louisiana still claims the most confirmed kills of birds so shoot less or stop lying when you don't kill birds , supporting your little man ego!! Also , Louisiana used to be the epicenter for wintering waterfowl now its Kansas, times have changed BECAUSE OF ALL OF US!!!! Grow up, make it happen or QUIT!!!!
