Bears& lousiana wildlife and fisheries

Reply
I can't speak for everyone but to me the bears are out of control. I've hunted 3 different properties in lousiana in the past two years that have bears and bear problems!

The bad-
They tear up feeders
They eat all of the feed
They are very intimidating
They do search for humans with there nose
The good-
None
Wildlife and fisheries are burning money up on these bears. They could be putting money into much more needed areas such as turkey, more agents, hell- give the agents a raise! I just know it's kinda spookie trying to get to your deer stand with a low power light that's aimed at the ground so you don't scare the deer.

you are missing the forest for the trees. Bears are part of the big picture and believe it or not the whole bear reintroduction will benefit turkeys. Property is being put back into timber and corridors are being bought up for the bears. This property is going to be valuable for all types of wildlife - turkeys included. They are part of our natural heritage as well.

Sorry your feeder got tore up, may have to try to actually HUNT and not sit and wait for something to come to a feeder. Lots of acorns and persimmons right now, gotta find em

Dbl - I agree with you 100%. Although I would love to see a bear in the wild and will relish it if/when it happens, I just don't see the point in the millions of dollars spent to reintroduce these animals. I don't buy into the 'heritage' theory. Why not attempt to bring back dinosaurs? That is part of our heritage as well.
All of that being said, I guess it's better to spend millions on ANY wildlife than getting it taken by our elected officials to be spent on some other garbage?

really dinosaurs jb, are humans the reason we no longer see dinosaurs? i hunt where there are good populations of bears i have had close encounters with bears, i have never felt threatened by a bear

Hunting bait is very legal in lousiana, all though I hunt away from the bait on the deer runs, I'm a very advid hunter, a true sportsman and a conservationist! I've also been on a lot of boards to promote our wildlife. I think I understand how how to hunt but this is not about this!!
This is more about spending money on the bears in lousiana. They are thriving,, doing spectacular!! I just simply think we could spend our money a lot better . I've seen lousiana dept of wildlife and fisheries spend the peoples money like its a game of monopoly .
Growing up as a child I had great opertunity in life to hunt with great rewards. I would like to see my sons and my grandchildren have the same opertunity as I did.

Bears oppose no threat is a bunch of bla bla bla,, you could walk through the 9th ward in Nola 50 times and not get shot but there is a risk you know your taking. When your taking kids hunting you seam to notice more

since you are an avid hunter and conservationist why are you asking these questions. All wildlife has a purpose on this earth.

Bears will one day be hunted in Louisiana.

It wasn't too long ago when turkeys were almost gone from Louisiana but people came together and through restocking efforts we now have a good population of turkeys THAT YOU CAN HUNT

It wasn't too long ago when alligators were endangered but people came together and through efforts we now have a good population of alligators THAT YOU CAN HUNT

do you see where this is going? Not everyone thought turkeys or alligators deserved special attention but now its a huge success story.

I would bet that some of the places you hunt now were void of deer and turkeys in the not too distant past but now we can be thankful for restocking efforts

Natural heritage - brown pelicans were all but extirpated in Louisiana not very long ago. Through some help now they are everywhere. We can't hunt them but imagine what Louisiana would be without the brown pelican. Its our state symbol on our flag.

Imagine a Louisiana without alligators

not the same but similar, lots of farmers and land owners around Yellowstone think that wolves shouldn't have been reintroduced into the park cause they like to eat too, every animal has a place and an effect on the environment, i thought this was a pretty cool and interesting story

Well, it's your right to have your own opinion but I have no interest of shooting a bear. There meat is grainy and tough. Taste horrible!!
The turkeys?? Yes, they are making a good come back now. But, I promise you,, the turkeys should had came back a long time ago. I'm very responsible for the come back. Believe me, if you could see and hear exactly what goes on with the money that was givin , donated, for the turkeys, maybe you would be in my boat . I'm not speaking from hear say ! I'm speaking from what I saw and heard !
When we start focusing in on wildlife we will be like some of the other states. That is what I want for my kids and there kids and so on.

Let's put the money to better use. The bears are doing fine

you are right, 'the bears are doing fine' because the effort is working like the effort to restore deer and turkey populations. You don't have to want to eat one to enjoy the species. Some people really like bear meat. Some people don't care for deer meat. I frankly have no desire to eat a pelican but I am glad to have them around. I don't really care for alligators, but I am glad they are around and appreciate the work of others to restore them back to Louisiana

Alligators problem was old folks feeding their families. Deer problem was old folks feeding their families. Before the smarties tune in this was before the oil companies and jobs. I read somewhere Teddy Roosevelt hunted elk in louisiana. Why not bring back the elk????? bear hunting in la. will never happen . Keep on dreaming. They will become a problem as they are elsewhere. People have jobs now and call themselves sportsman so there is no need to go out and do what you got to do to feed your family. Coyote's coons and possums running all over neighborhoods. PETA'S winning. I remember a warden telling me on west bay you kill a hog just keep hush about it cause it was illegal but they didn't want them....It was illegal most of the state to kill a hog now they nusence animals. To kill a hog was like cattle rustling. Go ahead and kiss your bear now and hug him you'll be curseing him later...............

I agree, PETA is winning and we are giving them more to go on with the bears!! Mannnnnnn, ,, I agree with you!! Elk would be worth the $ ..
My buddy went up north and killed a bear, he said he sat in a stand in front of a barrel full of old fish guts!! He said the flies were horrible and stunk horrible. He shot a bear , it ran off, did a death moan and said to him self that he would never do it again. When he came back be cooked it like the guide told him to. We sat down and ate it kinda!! Yucky!!

Let me tell y'all the best way to cook bear! You go to the store and get a case of beer!
You cook the bear , serve it to all of your friends,Neighbors , and who ever else you can find!!
While they eat the bear, u drink the beer!!

You rite admiral ,,, no cheer....When I was coming up there was a bear tag from what I remember. I have nothing against bears but I don't think you will ever see a bear season here. Think of it this way. Years ago you had men with jobs that just couldn't cut it and they fished and trapped and if worse came to worse they broke out the bulleye to take care of their families. You killed deer out of season and shot gators or rabbits . Thats how it was . then the oil jobs came in and times changed and it came to be you could take care of your family thru a job. Some were not so fortunate and they continued to do what was necessary. We are now still sort of in that transition where it is coming a time that only the most fortunate will be able to hunt because of the expense. Take the nutria for example. this was a fur bearer that a lot of poor folk fed their family's by trapping. It has now tore up the marsh and swamp so bad you would think WLF would just have a free for all on them. How stupid, you have to use steel shot and you only have a limit of five from what i recall. And you have to remove them. Seems to me they are swamp dwellers so shoot on site and let the gators have a free meal. Our own WLF is letting PETA win. If you take offense to this post I'm sorry it wasn't meant to offend anyone. Maybe WLF and its politics......

PETA ain't in this fight. What is kinda sad though is that 'sportsmen' are divided about silly issues when we should stick together. Bears have a place here. Turkeys have a place here. Pelicans have a place here. Whooping cranes have a place here. Alligators have a place here.

There was once elk here, correct. We don't have near the habitat that we did back then though to support them. The prairies of SW LA were once 2 to 3 million acres, now they are less than 3 thousand acres - all ricefields now that couldn't support a herd.

What I find sad is that every time people have differing opinions, someone spews the garbage about how 'we as Sportsmen need to stick together.' Are we to not have our own opinion? Maybe we can have an opinion as long as we don't express it unless it fits with everyone else?
Nobody here is wanting to join PETA over bears being reintroduced. Some people just think that the millions of dollars spent on this project might have been better spent on some other issue.
There's a reason this country is full of mindless sheep....

Thank you jb!!
Everyone has a right to speak. And yes, PETA is a sneaky group, they will sit on the sideline till the time is right to jump in.
