Nothing like a good hunt on public land. Me and my buddy went down to Sherburne WMA on Sunday morning in hopes of shooting some feathers, reports in the area were conflicting but as most people say a bad day in the woods is better than most days regardless. Anyway we had a nice group of woodies/ teal fly in early, I missed on my three shots and my buddy's gun jammed; not a great start. Later that morning we had another small group fly in and I ended up shooting my first green winged teal. After that is was pretty dead. But like a blessing from above, literally, right before I was about to enter the water and get decoys, while my buddy's dog was having fun swimming, a group of mallards fly in! in a hurry we quietly fetch our 12 gauges and get the dog out of the water. While planning our stalk, we have another group start to circle and land, as we are both frozen/trying to figure out our best lines of attack the hen next to the drake I am eyeing decides to she has had enough and was out of there. Well with that I wasn't letting my first drake get away so as he came off the water I put him down with one #4 shot, and unloaded the other two trying to catch a duck or two more flying out. Meanwhile my buddy put a hen down with his #6 shot. After that we were both ecstatic and on cloud 9, especially me! To top the day off my buddies 7 year old chocolate lab retrieved her first 2 ducks! All in all a great day full of memories and one that left us wanting more. Happy hunting and holidays to you all.
