Best GPS Sd for Delacroix

I just bought a Lowrance Elite 5 HDI unit for my boat. I fish the Delacroix area when I do fish. My question is what is the best SD card to give me the best possible map of the Delacroix area?

What is the best mapping for the Delacroix area?
~ Captain Paul's response to: ~ JPOCHE85 ~

I see that there is a great deal of opinions concerning mapping for your GPS unit. That is very good and you should consider them all. But, I like the Lowrance TOPO INSIGHT. Insight HD & PRO v14. The TOPO INSIGHT is based on USGS topographical maps and not NOAA Charts.
Yes, I know, the NOAA charts are the best in the world for detailing the Aids To Navigation buoys, cans, nuns, lights and day markers that define established marine waterways, but I believe that they do not depict the myriad of small bayous, lagoons, bays, lakes and canals that make up the Louisiana swamps and marshes.
According to Lowrance the Topo Insight HD maps are “Based on satellite imagery from the U.S. Geological Survey with resolution down to 8m. They are compatible with Lowrance HDS Gen2 and Gen2 Touch, Mark HDI and Elite HDI products.

The topo based mapping covers the small land features as well as the water bodies that surround them. The TOPO INSIGHT is sold in regions and they have one for the SE U.S. that covers Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, Florida N. and S. Carolina and Tennessee.

So my suggestion is that you visit a stocking Lowrance dealer and view the available mapping. Check out the TOPO INSIGHT by zooming in to an area that you are familiar with and see if it meets your requirements.

If not, check out the NAUTICAL INSIGHT. Compare them along with the other mapping suggestions some of your readers made.

The best maps by far are the ones made by Legend Cartography. You may not like the price but it is basically google maps/google earth brought to your unit. It is the best thing for inshore fishing, or any south louisiana angler. Legendcartography.com

the best map cards out there hands down are the standard e-mapping chips, but I dont think they work with the elite models. Anyone needed a gps for maps should get one of the hds models as they seem to have the better options for maps of this area.

d-10, I must agree with you that Legend is without any doubt the best software available.

As to your comment about price, I believe relatively speaking the price is fair. For about $200.00 you are getting detailed, updated graphics of about 30,000 sq. miles.

The Louisiana package ($200.00) has mapping of the entire coast from Texas/La line to the Miss./La line and then from the coast line north up to and a little through the Interstate 10 corridor.

Customer service is also second to done.

Hahaha yeah I think the price is very reasonable but for some people first looking for maps they get a little bit of a surprise when they see the price but this product is by far worth every penny!

Both of those SD cards work with the Elite 5 HDI,

Chris, you are correct that both cards work great. My recommendation of Legends was not in any manner a knock against Standard. In fact, I am still a little 'old school' and use their 'hard' maps quite often!

My comment was also not to promote either card. There is a lot of confusion as to what units can run these map cards.

The original poster said he has an Elite 5 HDI. There are several models in the Lowrance Elite line and not all of them are compatible. However, having an Elite 5 HDI myself, I just wanted to point out that it can run both brands of these cards.

You want to stay away from the google earth type maps yes they are nice and look much better but they only show where the land is now you will be better off staying with the maps that show where land was pre Katrina like the ones that come standard in most gps units that way you can avoid getting stuck by avoiding areas that show where the land was because in most cases its just the first foot of land that washed away and now you just have very shallow spots with hard bottoms that if you go into you will get stuck

I've always ran my gatortail down at delacroix and want to bring my bass boat. Are the pipelines around crows foot still navigable for an outboard or all they also silted in? What bout the one the runs from just southwest of crowfoot and comes out to Spanish lake by sun bayou?
Thanks

I haven't been in the crows foot in a long time so I would suggest that you go in slow so you don't have to worry about getting stuck the other canal (Manuel's canal) that runs to Spanish lake that comes out between oak river and sun bayou is fine it's still shallow in the middle but it no problem running on top I have a buddy that runs it with a 32 ft skiff with a diesel motor
