,22lr is a great gun to learn gun safety and how to use a scope. My son's 1st deer rifle was a single shot H&R in the .44 magnum caliber. It makes a big boom, but has almost no kick at all, and will drop a deer at 125 yards or less. He shot that gub from the time he as 8 till he turned 16. He shoots a 45/70 now. At 8 I got him a Mossberg .20 guage. It has a stock with parts to make the stock longer. All the parts are on it now, and it's his favorite rabbit gun. Take a look at the H&R .44 for a deer gun.

I always got my kids a BB gun first , mainly just to let them get the safety basics , like carrying , barrel direction , using the safety and such . After they understand totally about the safety aspect then step them up to a 22 .

don't push it...safety comes w/a 'weapon' that not deadly...cheers

Choupic hit it dead on ........a BB gun is the best gun . It teaches so much . It is a gun that you can let them go off alone too. Our favorite gun at the camp is a Crossman pump. You can put a pellet in it or it holds a bunch of BB's for even quicker shooting.

BB gun for now to play around the house and 410 single shot while small game hunting. At age 10 upgrade to a 20 gauge and once he is an accomplished small game hunter introduce him to a rifle IMO. However now days there's reports with 6 year olds who have killed bigger deer than me with a rifle.

We went thro 2 red riders so far an we have pretty good gun safety an he shoots targets an cans with the .22 so I know he knows how to line up the scope on whatever he wants to shoot at. I have 2 - 410's a single shot H&R an a moss burg but i hate to scare him then he might not want to hunt anymore!

Start him off on a shotgun(410).the shotgun will teach him how to point a gun . When he is ready for a rifle (around 9-10) I'd get him a 7m08 and would use a manage recoil shell. 223 is fun to shoot but not much good in the woods.
