Catfish Bait

Reply

What is yalls favorite catfish bait? I have been running some jugs and doing pretty good on worms but you can keep the little ones off of it. Crawfish seem to work good but are not as easy to find. Im going back this weekend and gonna try some cut shad. What do yall like to use?

Try chicken hearts. My dad uses them when there are no bait shad to catch near the camp. And they don't pull it off just so.

I like chicken liver. You can't leave them soaking long. Other people at my camp like chicken hearts too.

Heck, my dad even used hotdogs cut into chunks one time and did real well. Anything that's gonna let out some kind of smell will work. It's to find something that doesn't get pulled off easily.

The chicken livers pull off really easy, but they work the best where I fish. I put out no more than 18 jugs, and I sit in my boat in the bayou and watch them. After 30 minutes if I haven't caught a fish I re-bait. I usually have fish before I finish putting them out. The area by my camp is very productive. I use circle hooks. I cut the livers in 1/2 and thread them on carefully.

I like chicken livers and a 1/2' piece of the cheap red hot dogs. I think it helps to keep the livers on and it has worked well for me.

Cut shad work great. I find if you fillet your perch and then use whats left as cut bait this is the best bait there is for big fish. When fishing with shad or perch the bait usually doesn't start to work good until it has been in the water for 12-24hrs and gets better the longer it is there. If you are trying to fish your jugs right after you put them out the best bait I know is cut stew meat. They tear it up but it is only good for 2-4hrs not for an overnight soak.

Go to any meat market and buy some cheap hog/pig liver and you'll never switch again. It's very firm and keeps its smell and color.
