need opinions on a safety issue

i run a flat boat and typically run pretty popular bayous that curve a lot. I also like to get a very early bite and do a lot in the dark. I am trying to come up with a way to make it safer. my boat isnt that tall and is impossible to see in advance. i would like to come up with a 10 foot pole of some sort that i cant put maybe an orange triangle shape flag at the top during the day while running and also have a small light attached to the top of it while running in the dark. obviously a battery operated light at the top would be best but im thinking that would be to much weight and that i will need to run a wire through the pole to hook up to the boat batteries. im having an issue coming up with a material for the pole. i was thinking pvc but that might be to flexible and not strong enough. i am not in a big boat so space is an issue. any ideas are welcome. thanks for the help

It's a bit expensive but I bought the powerpoles micro and I tie orange tape to the top of the 8ft pole and it is plenty high for people to see me when I'm running or trolling.

...why not two 10 ft poles run parallel from sides of boat about 25 ft above water...one w/a big green lite and one w/a big red lite in middle of bayou ???...it's 'Doubled Garonteed' they will slow down...it will look like ''de Bismarc' sitting in de'bayou !!!(please note all technical advise comes from my 'Couzan' Buzzy Wabbit down in Caminita)...cheers

p/s...it's good to see someone safety minded...you going in the right direction...just hoss'n w/'ya...cheer

Best advise I can give you from experience of many night trips. Leave early and go slow speed kills.

I would weld me a 12' piece of 1' aluminum pipe vertical in my boat in the place u like best. Then I would slip a short piece of 3/4' PVC in it to make bushing. Then buy u a stick it anchor pin. Stick in pipe standing up and attach a orange go cart type flag or similar to it. It's stiff enough to put a running lite on top if u want. When u get where u going it's a great anchor. Weighs very little, not real expensive (about $80) and extremely durable. Tie a rope to it good so u don't lose. Good luck.

I'll second JS and take it even further. Except in the summer for trout, rarely is getting to that pre-sunrise spot worth it. And if it's a long run, leave very early and go slow. I've seen bad things happen to the impatient and the careless.

You can often leave at twilight, full speed, and still get to that pre-sunrise spot. Float at the dock, ready to go, watch for the glow, and get after it.

As for as lights in the dark, in addition to the required running lights (by law), get a bright handheld halogen light which not only lets you see, but other boats can see you coming around a bend.

They make so many lightweight LED flashlights now that would work easily for this. Check out the EMT conduit at Lowes etc. You could make a quick cheap rig with light and lots of flagging as needed. You are on the right track for sure, good on you for your concerns. Just going slow after daylight won't be enough, you can still get run over in those grassy bayous by oncoming traffic. Almost happened to me near Verm Bay last year.
