Killing Grass In Pond

Reply

I have a pond that i have been working on and stocking for the last year or so. I fertilized it last summer and stocked it with 300 catfish in last september. Now the grass is taking over. Every time i go look at it there is more and more grass. What can i use to kill it without huting the fish? Its not just growing out from the banks it is all over the pond.

How big is the pond? If you can get a hold of some Arsenal which is salt of imazapyr or Rodeo which is glyphosate with an aquatic label they will work.

It is about half an acre.

Either one of those chemicals will work, just follow the label rates.

If the pond does not have any routes of escape wildlife and fisheries will issue a permit to buy carp to put in there. They will keep it cleared out until they die.

I had a pond one time that this happened to.I tried to rake the grass out with no luck then I started to noticed that my catfish were eating the grass after they got some size to them they had cleaned it out over the winter months.I know it made it hard to fish because when you would catch one you would have to pull in a big ball of grass with the fish.I sure wished I still had that land with the pond

There is no way for anything without legs to get out. It is a pond in the middle of a field. I didnt know you had to get a permit to use grass carp. I thought you could just buy some from dunns fish farm or somewhere like that. How many carp would i need for a half acre pond?

My neighbor was allowed to buy 2 for a pond about the same size. They cleaned it up in about half a year and now it stays pretty grass free.
