Biloxi Marsh

Hello. I am a die hard deer hunter. Been duck hunting a few times (dont have much experience) when invited along with friends. However, this year i would like my 8 year old to experience it. I would like to take him in the Biloxi Marsh WMA (I fish around that area). Im not asking for spots to go, just pointers on what to look for, types of decoys, etc.... I have a 12' riveted boat, like this photo, with a 20hp tiller. Would this work for the area? Thanks

You could do the Biloxi WMA in that boat; but you will have a very long run. I would suggest Big Branch NWR or Pearl River. They both offer much closer access; but also are very crowded. The Pearl is especially crowded and unless you can go during the week; I would not suggest it. Big Branch will be crowded too but usually it isn't as bad and other hunters help each other out to some degree; and they do not allow mud motors. Good luck and be careful.

How long of a run from bsm? Like a hour or so? I fish the stump lagoon and muscle bay area with my dad, but thats with a fish and ski boat. I didnt think st malo would be more than a hour with my little boat

Re: Biloxi Marsh
You can get to good spots about 10 miles from the launch. My mud boat went about 25 miles an hour and it took us about 30 to 40 minutes to get there. 12 foot boat is a bit small for that long of a run. We will be using a faster outboard this year since the air cooled motors have been banned by the infinite wisdom of the land owner and the LDWF. Watch for the wooden dames in the middle of the bayous marked on the LDWF WMA map for the area.

I do not hunt Biloxi WMA but know folks that do. Word is that the closest ponds off St. Malo get crowded too. Not trying to discourage you; just telling what I have heard. Go for it; its public property and probably will be a shade less crowded this year since mud motors have been banned.
