Using square hay bails to make islands in marsh ?

Reply

Was hoping for some feedback from those with experience using hay bails to create small islands in open water for ducks blinds spots. Does this cultivate growth of roso or other natural cover? My marsh is basically an impoundment with no tidal flow and very low salinity. Any feedback would be appreciate fellows.

It works, but you need to retain the hay inside of a confined area. I have had blinds that used welded-wire mesh, but did not like for the dog. You can use green plastic fencing, line with a fabric cloth (to retain hay) and fill above the water line. Plant smooth cord grass or other marsh grasses that grow naturally around your blind and let them establish. I would stay away from rozo and cattails unless you want your blind to be eventually lost inside of their growth.

thanks for the info, wanting to construct a platform blind with boat hide parallel behind the blind. but want the island to look round in shape so the setup does not look boxy.

Yep, that is the ticket and add additional bush every time you go out to give it some contrast. No small task to get started, but it can be added to every year after you have the base established.
