~ Captain Paul's response
Please use this information as a general guide to these locations, as I cannot guarantee that the information is 100%. Some of the platforms may have been moved due to the recent trends in the offshore oil business.
With that, my information for the platforms are:
Shell Platform GC-65 A “BULLWINKLE, ” is located in Green Canyon Leased Block 65 and is at or about 27° 53.068’ N. Latitude ~ 90° 54.155’ W. Longitude. That puts it about 114 Miles at a bearing of 232° magnetic from the entrance of the Southwest Pass of the Mississippi River.
Although you did not specifically ask for it, the Shell platform BRUTUS
Is located in GREEN CANYON Block # 158 and is at or about 27° 47.742’ N. Latitude ~ 90° 38.824’ W. Longitude
And, in the same general area

Ursa is at or about 28° 09.242’ N. Latitude ~ 89° 06.213’ W. Longitude. It is located in Leased block 810 of the Mississippi Canyon Area, about 7.4 miles east of the MARS platform.
Looking North and North west from these two platforms you should find MEDUSA.
The Murphy Exploration Company’s Medusa Spar platform was/is in the northern part of Leased Block 582 of the Miss. Canyon. It is ABOUT 34.7 MILES at a bearing of 182° Magnetic from the South West Pass channel GONG Buoy Green # 1. It is about 21.4 miles at a bearing of 318° (mag) from the Mars Platform and about 35 miles at a bearing of 182° (Mag) from the entrance to SOUTHWEST PASS of the Mississippi River.
The MEDUSA platform is at or about 28°23.559’ N. Latitude ~ 89°27.210’ W. Longitude
Another major platform north of the Mars platform is LENA.
Lena located in Block 280 of the Mississippi Canyon area. The LEAN platform is at or about 28° 39.775’ N. Latitude ~ 89°09.467’ W. Longitude. It is about 34 miles NNE (07° Mag) from the Mars platform.
The massive BULLWINKLE -SHELL GC 65 Platform in Green Canyon Block 65 is at or about 27° 53.058’ N. Latitude ~ 90° 54.088’ W. Longitude.
The BRUTUS platform another by Shell Oil, is located in Green Canyon Leased Block 158 and is at or about 27° 47.742 N. Latitude ~ 90 38.824’ W. Longitude.
The Genesis production facility was/is moored in 2,600ft of water in the GREEN CANYON Leased Block 205. It is located at or about 27°46.682’ N ~ 090° 31.068’ W longitude. That position is about 93 miles at a bearing of 191° (Mag) from Belle Pass (Fourchon) WHICH IS JUST WEST OF GRAND ISLAND at the Gulf Of Mexico.
The Typhoon platform Is located in Green Canyon Block 237 and is at or about
27° 43.910’ N. Latitude ~ 91° 06.674’ W. Longitude
The Ocean Quest is in Green Canyon Block 199 and is at or about 27° 45.993’ N. Latitude ~ 90° 47.927’ W. Longitude.
THE DEVIL’s TOWER
I noted that there is a platform in MC 773 that is plotted at or about 28°12.534’ N. Latitude ~ 088°44.189’ W. Longitude. This platform is SPAR that is commonly called THE DEVIL’s TOWER. It is located near the western center of the Leased Block.
And of course, don’t for get about the Mid Night Lump.
THE MIDNIGHT LUMP
Another usually productive location is the MIDNIGHT LUMP. The area is officially named The Sackett Bank, but it is commonly called the called the “Midnight Lump”. It is a draw for tuna and Wahoo during certain times of the year. The Midnight Lump has become very popular in the last decade. Sometimes there are more than 100 boats a day in the active part of the season.
You will need a deepwater depth finder to actually find and “see” the exact location. The seabed rises about from 60+ fathoms to 33 fathoms at the “lump.” Picture a series of truncated cones rising from the seabed.
Gulf currents push water over the top of the lump, causing smaller “bait fish” to be pushed against and over the lump. Amberjack, Tuna, Marlin, Snapper, Grouper and Wahoo usually gather there to eat. Usually fishing one side of the lump is better than the other. The currents will determine which side of the lump is the better side to fish.
I believe that the approximate center of “The Midnight Lump” ~ The Sackett Bank, is at or about 28° 38.122’ N. Lat ~ 89° 33.249’ W. Long. The location is about 20.5 miles from Southwest Pass at a bearing of 201° (Mag) and is about 35.2 miles at a bearing of 192° magnetic from the end of the breakwater (29°08.233’ N. Latitude ~ 89° 26. 184’ W. Longitude ) at Tiger Pass.
The location is about 20.14 miles from the Southwest Pass of the Mississippi river at a position near the light house (near land’s end) at a bearing of 202° (Mag), it is also about 19.36 miles at a bearing of 203° (Mag) from the GREEN #1 GONG buoy in the lower part of the SW channel.
This position is about 49.64 Miles from the RED #12 marker in Barataria Pass at a point that is between Grand Isle and Grand Terre Island.
Bring plenty of anchor line as you will need every foot of it. Most fishers suggest that you use a minimum of 600 feet of anchor line with anywhere from 10 to 30 feet of chain. The chain will greatly enhance your anchor's ability to set. Your anchor size will vary greatly, but a medium-sized vessel (23 to 28 feet) should use at least a 22-25 pound anchor. Some captains suggest an anchor point on the “lump” at about 250 feet deep.
The Genesis production facility is moored in 2,600ft of water in the GREEN CANYON Leased Block 205.
I suggest that you first consider NOAA Marine Chart 1115A ~ Leased Blocks Cape St. George to the Mouth of the Mississippi River. This chart will have the leased blocks in the area of your concern. Unfortunately the Chart only covers the eastern part of the Mississippi Canyon Leased Area off the mouth of the MS River. The companion chart to the west is Chart 1116-A ~ Leased Blocks MS River to Galveston Bay. These two charts will give you all of the offshore leased block areas from the Florida panhandle to Galveston Bay.
Any authorized agent for NOAA can order or print these charts for you. Bew sure to get the most current issue of these charts.
These charts however, are in a scale of 1:456394, which is not suited for navigating the channels or the river, but will get you to the leased blocks. For a better view of the access channels select a chart with at least 1:80000 scale.
These Leased block charts show some if not all of the platforms in these blocks. I noted that there is a platform in MC 773 that is plotted at or about 28°12.534’ N. Latitude ~ 088°44.189’ W. Longitude. This platform is SPAR that is commonly called THE DEVIL’s TOWER. It is located near the western center of the Leased Block.
Unless otherwise specified, all positions are stated as H,DDD,MM.mmm and were determined using WGS 84 DATUM. All Headings/bearings/courses are stated in Magnetic Degrees.
