Did anyone hunt this area for teal if so how did you do and how is the area. I have never hunted this area and am going to try for big duck season with my pirogue from hwy 51. Is the marsh solid or will I sink if I try to get out of the pirogue.

Keep an eye on the water levels/tides/rainfall using the USGS website. The water can get low and you will sink in the mud. Good luck. Be safe

Redhead thanks for the info I will hunt from the pirogue. Going to do some scouting in the beginning of November hope I see a few birds. Do you hunt the area often what kind of birds can I expect to see.

Wood Duck City!! Only problem is finding them after. The vegetation (cut grass) can get thick and it can be tough to find them. But mottleds, some teal, mallards from time to time; pretty much a mixed bag and could find some good birds if you are lucky.

PS: crossing OVER the train tracks is illegal, under them, however, is not.

I was going to cross the tracks will wildlife agent issue a ticket for that. I find that to be to be a problem as you can cross them to access the nature walk.

I have talked to agents about it and they said it's not their issue, but if they get complaints from the railroad company they may need to start stepping in. But tons of people do it, so that's your call. I have never heard/seen a ticket written, but I haven't been since last fall, so things may have changed. Also, be careful out there because some hunters tend to overcall/sky blast. 100% Amateur Hour.

Thanks again for your advice I think I will find a spot that is a bit more difficult to get to in order to separate myself from the crowd. I will let you know what I find when I go scouting.

Less than 20 years ago, before salvinia and flooded corn fields further up the flyway, the mallard hunting in the Maurepas Swamp basin was world class. Believe me, there was no better place in the world. Now, with the flooded corn fields that are Ducks Unlimited projects, the migration has changed. If you ever drive through Misourri, Kansas, Illinois, etc., you will notice how vast an area this is. So, how is growing corn and flooding it with no intent to harvest it considered to be a normal agricultural practice? It is not, it is baiting! But, big money people are involved and many of them are DU officials.

I have been hunting Joyce for around 8 years or so. It is a hit or miss spot for sure. I hunted joyce a lot this past teal season and killed 5 solo limits over the course of teal season. YOU WILL SINK if you step out of your pirogue in joyce unless you find some solid ground which is hard to come by. Joyce can get very crowed and people will set up right next to you. A lot of inexperienced hunters will shoot at illegal birds and black birds which is quite aggravating. If you are going opening day i suggest getting there from 2:30am-3:30am. Some hunters will be out there even before that

It sounds like I will have a lot of other hunters to contend with if I want to try this area. I may have to go to Venice I didn't want to put the pirogue in my bay boat. The hunting opportunities may be better there.

Took easy limits of teal in Venice

I also hunt Venice during teal season and it was the best teal hunting I had ever seen
