Buckshot?

I'm trying to get a sense of the limits on buckshot use. We can probably all agree that a small 'meat hog' shot in the head at 25 yards will drop. I'm trying to get an idea on how well buckshot works at 35-45 yards on deer.
Example:
1. Hate it. Used 00 Buck on mid sized deer at 42 yards- lung shot, ran off and I never found.
2. Great, I've killed 6 deer at 30-40 yards, 000 Buck, all neck shots, nothing ran over 10 yards.
so, the good, the bad, and the ugly.

Re: Buckshot?
It all depends. I have a Patternmaster Extended Long Range Choke in my gun. I shoot Winchester Hi-Velosity 00 Buck in it and at 50 yards, only throw 2 pellets outside a 13 inch pie-plate. I have shot Federal Buckshot as well as Remington Buckshot and those do not shoot as well. Each gun shoots different rounds differently. You need to experiment and see what your gun shoots best. You can call Patternamster, they are extremely helpful and will point you in the right direction. Their chokes are $100, but well worth the price.

I agree with JB I also have a pattermaster and the groups are tight. Well worth the investment.

I use no.1 buckshot for deer, you get better penetration and have more chances of hitting the vitals and backbone. I hunted with a shotgun for years and I found that it works best for me.

Bassmaster101: on the No.1, what ranges do you feel are good for that size buckshot? What part of the deer do you aim for? As a rifle hunter I have never taken anything other than a lung shot but some buckshot hunters are telling me if the rack in inferior and you just want the meat- a neck shot is good.

I have killed them up to 70 yards. depends on how far as were to aim but left to right I aim at front shoulder just inside the line. most of the time just a tad high. You need to pattern your gun to see what buckshot it likes the best. super x double x mags is what I shoot.

...since he maybe moving slow on your first shot try 'rifled slug' (only w/a Modified or Imp Cyl bore)...then the next two back it up w/Buck shot...(he maybe runn'n fast)??? cheers

Impressive display there Bass. I've been using a 30 06 for a while now and really like the energy it delivers (just get it close). But I hunt wooded edge of swamp, some open field maybe 100 yds at best. I guess I like the fact of usng a scope and placing clean shots. But maybe I could benifit from using a shotgun expessially when stalking or walking to and from, being I'm mostly in wooded/swamp?

Well, I've had that thought. I'll jump deer going in and out of tree stands. I use a 30-30 Marlin 336 but I also have a rifled slug barrel that I could easily pack in. Mossberg 500 pump shotgun. Fast and easy to change barrels. These deer I jump are obviously moving and with a rifle and low power scope- I just don't shoot but over the years I could have collected quite a few extra deer if I had buckshot.
My thinking right now is if I can find a load that will put the pellets into a 15' circle at 30 yards- that ought to be pretty good.
I'm heading out in a few days to test the patterns on a variety of buckshot loads I've bought.
